Xbox Reveal Event Coverage

News

  • The E3 Coverage continues with this Lord of the Rings Online Preview at Gamers Info.

he Lord of the Rings Online allows players to create characters from four of the Living Races: humans, elves, hobbits and dwarves. There's no option to play as a member of Sauron's forces: instead, the focus is placed on the game's narrative, which explores some of the struggles experienced by the Living Races at the end of the Third Age. Stepping on the heels of the Fellowship of the Ring isn't the aim here: instead, the game hopes to explore events in the rest of the world, whilst the Fellowship quest onwards towards Mount Doom.

  • Here is yet another... WoW Burning Crusade Preview. This one comes from Gaming Excellence.

So what is offered to devoted players in The Burning Crusade? First and foremost on anyone's list would be the hundreds of hours of new gameplay in a completely new area for high-level characters. This begins with the opening of the Dark Portal from Azeroth to Outland, which will be similar to a world-event, but will not require that all players be in the same area to experience it. Although the details were sketchy at this point, Blizzard has stated that regardless of where you may happen to be on the world map when this occurs on your server, and regardless of your level, you will experience something akin to hell freezing over. Or the gates to hell opening up and unleashing monsters like you have never seen before. Or the announcement of Starcraft 2 followed by a server crash. Okay, so the last one was a stretch, but I assure you that whatever does happen, you will want to be online for it, even if your character is still only level 25 or so.

  • A sea of red, and they're all playing WoW...

VNUnet reports that 4.3 million Chinese have subscribed to World of Warcraft since service provider The9 began operating a year ago. The9 has failed to lock in rights to WoW's "Burning Crusade" expansion, fueling speculation that Blizzard's desire for a bigger slice of the profit pie (and concerns over The9's hosting of another MMO: Guild Wars)may lead the titanic game developer to search out another China provider.

More than 4.3 million World of Warcraft user accounts were paid for and activated in China during the past year, according to the company that operates the multiplayer online game in the country.

The game's developer, Blizzard, is claiming more than six million players worldwide, suggesting that China has more players than any other nation and could already account for more than half the global total.

  • The MMO to bridge East and West?

Though I get a little cheesed at meaningless game names whose sole purpose is to fill out a snappy abbreviation, I might just give Soul of the Ultimate Nation (or SUN, /sigh) a shot, based on what TMCnet's saying.

"Sun'' has top-quality graphics and sound, but what distinguishes it most from a hundred similar MMORPGs is that it is designed to meet the taste of both Western and Asian audiences. There are tons of missions, quests and adventures for Western users who tend to play solo.

Apparently, for the first time ever, it's a blend of what eastern and western gamers want . Oh, Lineage you say? FFXI you say? Nevermind those.

Just read TMCnet's first impressions on Webzen's Soul of the Ultimate Nation by clicking here.

  • MMOs take spots 3 and 4 in the US PC games charts for May 7-13

Well, Arena.net doesn't want Guild Wars Factions to be known as an MMORPG (they're too good for us) but Factions fell in at fourth spot. World of Warcraft still reigns at 3rd spot, it's been in the top five since charts were chiseled in stone.

Speaking of holdovers from November 2004, World of Warcraft was the number two game of the week, yet again showing the masses' desire to emigrate to Azeroth. It was followed by newcomer Guild Wars Factions, the first stand-alone expansion for NCsoft's free massively multiplayer online role-playing game.

See the rest of the charts breakdown at Gamespot.

  • This on the official site today.

Vanguard was recently featured on the cover of Computer Games Magazine and in that issue we included codes that will allow for closed beta access to the game. We add new beta testers in regular batches however we have not yet added any CGM codes. Because of the publisher change for Vanguard, we are discussing where the beta will now be hosted before we add any new people into the process. Just as soon as we have a solid date for a beta hosting change, we will announce it here. A reminder, however: the CGM codes will not all be activated at once. We will add people in batches and you must register the code you received in your magazine. Please follow the instructions here to register your code with us and we look forward to seeing you all in game just as soon as we can!

If you do not have a CGM code and you have registered on our forums hoping to be chosen for beta selection, you will still be considered for beta. We greatly appreciate everyone who is interested in helping us test our game and we’ll continue to add batches of testers in. Those who are selected will receive further instructions via email. However, just as with the CGM codes, we are not currently adding any beta testers from our forum registrations until we get more details about switching over to our new co-publisher.

We hope you will all remain patient with us while we get some of these new details hammered out. We very much appreciate that so many of you want to help us make Vanguard a great success!

While you're thinking about how much you love Vanguard, you can visit our Vanguard: Saga of Heroes Community.

  • Man I love this company. I'm not kidding. I LOVE them. Today's Developer Log talks about the upgrades to the Content System and I'm not kidding you, this game is going to rock.

It’s finally happened – our user-content system finally gets an upgrade! And there are so many revisions and additions that you’re going to get a whole dev-log introducing the changes! :)

In fact, it’s the sheer size and scope of the changes that made it take so long. We’ve got a rather tight schedule around here at FLS, so imagine Aether’s challenge: coordinate the efforts of several devs and designers in order to give the entire user-content system and overhaul, but don’t use up any time on the schedule. How does one man manage a Herculean task like this? How did Aether get useful labor out of this herd of cats? By harassing us on a daily basis! By insulting our bloodlines, by pleading with us, and by plying us with free t-shirts and booze. Gently, quietly, and ever so slowly, Aether managed to turn our after-hours efforts into a product we can release to you: our adoring public.

So let’s get down to the often revolutionary (and sometimes controversial) changes!

You can read the rest here.
