    What occurs in the single-player section of the game, and when that's completed is it a traditional MMORPG that we move into?

    Erling Ellingsen: The single-player feature has changed much since we started designing Age of Conan, mostly due to feedback from the testers in the closed beta. Originally it was designed to be an entire single-player game before you stepped into the massive world, but we've scaled this down somewhat because people generally wanted to be able to interact with other players much sooner.

    CVG.com has posted the first installment of an interview that have recently done with Erling Ellingson, the project manager for the upcoming Age of Conan.

    Blizzard's all-dominating World of Warcraft is set to face its most serious challenge yet in 2007, a number of new 'big name' MMORPGs preparing to enter the market before the year is out.

    Product manger Erling Ellingsen reveals that on top of creating a compelling MMORPG experience Funcom is aiming to incorporate cross-platform adventuring into Age of Conan. So, while the PC version will release first this October, PC gamers and Xbox 360 gamers could eventually be able to buddy-up and compare oiled muscly pectorals.

    "Cheating is always a tough theme. What is your strategy against cheaters?

    We have a zero tolerance towards cheaters. In the past, with our other MMO Anarchy Online, we’ve struck down on them harshly. People who break such rules will be banned. On the other side, our developers are working hard on creating systems that will minimize the possibilities of cheating. We’re being proactive about this, trying to beat the cheaters to it."

    We started in character creation and we found ourselves on a slave ship selecting between the Stygian, the Aquilonian and the Cimmerian. Escaping slavery, you are making your way in this brutal, backward world. There is one word I can say about the level of physical character customization possible in Age of Conan, and that is "astounding!" Over 30 different aspects of physical attributes that you can adjust await the eager fans. For example, just for the cheeks alone, you can adjust the length, the width, the height and the depth.

    The same goes for the body. You can create an anorexic woman with huge (and I mean huge!) ta-tas, a man with the physique of Arnie or Pee-Wee Herman as you wish, and as usual, there's the wonderful one-click randomizer. One thing you cannot do is to give your character a pot-belly. Ahem... you are an escaped galley slave after all. But, onto the game and its unique features!

    MMORPG.com: The video game industry continues to grow very quickly. What are your hopes for games in the future?

    Thomas Wollbekk: I hope that we see more gaming companies that dare to come up with new ways of doing things and dare to be original. Go Nintendo Wii! I’m also looking forward to see how e-sports will turn out in the future, maybe we one day will see gaming in the Olympics!

    Gaute Godager: Yes, absolutely! Making a massively multiplayer online game is a whole different ball-game than making a single-player game. It's just such an incredibly complex venture that as a game developer you end up learning something every day as you go along. The first time you make such a game, it's going to be a roller-coaster ride to the very end.

    With an original system of single-player game merging into a MMO environment. How will the single-player experience enhance the MMO game?

    The way we see it, MMOs can be very intimidating at first. They lack many of the gameplay mechanics that draw the player in from the start of most games, such as story that really takes you by the hand and gets you going. Stories that can shake your world and it feel like you are really something other than just another peasant out to kill rabbits. We wanted to incorporate that into the MMO genre, and thus we created what we refer to as Age of Conan's single-player part. Actually, though, it is not truly single-player all the time.

    Craig Morrison: We are planning to have a version on console yes, but we haven't made any announcements yet as to which console it will be, stay tuned!

  • Funcom explains to CVG why Conan will be "the most mature MMO ever made"

    CVG has posted an interview today with Game Director, Gaute Godager. This interview reveals lots of great details about the game.

    Conan (as it's known to its mates) is being billed as mature, brutal and barbaric, all in 7.1 surround audio to make the crunching sound of bone hit home even harder. It's up to you to try and keep a lid on peace and serenity of the world but things are obviously on the brink of chaos and spiraling out of control. Wouldn't be much fun otherwise, would it?

  • Comic Book Editor and Writer, Roy Thomas Interviewed

    The official site for Age of Conan was updated recently with an interview with Roy Thomas. He will be helping to create an Ultimate Guide for the game.

    Roy Thomas is probably best known for introducing Conan the Barbarian to American comics, with a series that added to the storyline of Robert E. Howard's character and helped define a whole era of American comics.

    Now he has teamed up with the team at DK Publishing to create a wonderful fully illustrated Ultimate Guide to the world of Conan. We caught up with the man himself to ask him a few questions about what it means to be involved with Conan again!
