Age of Conan: Unchained

  • Gameplay Preview #8 - Spellweaving

The official site for Funcom's Age of Conan offers a look at spellweaving. Keep reading to see what you can expect from this forthcoming MMO.

This week we take a look at the dark and arcane arts that are part of the magic system in Age of Conan, and in particular our unqiue spellweaving system!

In Age of Conan we wanted the magic to reflect the world in which the game is based. Dealing with the arcane arts and siphoning the power of ancient gods is not something to be taken lightly. Just like our melee system, our magic system will also call upon the skills of the player. The player learning to balance their lust for powerful affects with the dangers that calling upon such extraordinary magic incurs.

Head over to the Age of Conan site to read the rest of this preview!

  • The feature of the day for Age of Conan is a "getting to know you" piece on their music director Knut Avenstroup.

Want to get an insight into what goes into making the soundtrack and music for a game like Age of Conan? Wonder no longer as we grab some time with the man behind the music!

Could you please introduce yourself to the readers, what you do on the Conan project and how long you have been working on the game?

Hi everybody! My name is Knut Avenstroup Haugen. I create all the music for Age of Conan and I've been involved with this project since fall 2004.

What is it like to create the score for a gigantic game like Age of Conan?

It's a lot of fun! I've always been a Conan fan and a gamer, so basically, I've always wanted to work on a project like this. It's hugely exciting to be a part of bringing the world of Hyboria to life (and in my opinion it's the most captivating and convincing incarnation so far!). Of course, it's a monumental task, but I love writing music and on this project I'll be able to create music for a whole universe! It can't get much better than that :)

  • There is so much information on this one today that I decided to put it all in one place. Let's start with the Concept Art.

We have added some new concept art to the site today showing some of the work going into creating the buildings of Hyboria!

When building an MMO one of the things that a great deal of time is spent on is creating the world itself! This is particularly true when you are dealing with a wonderfully deep license like the world created by Robert E Howard. The world has been envisioned by millions of peoples reading his books for decades and everyone has an ideal in their mind when they think of Cimmeria, Stygia, Tortage or anywhere else you care to mention!

Bringing it all to life is no easy task - from concept art, through three dimensional art, to the world builders carefully putting everything together a whole lot of work goes into creating the world that the players will be able to explore.

This week we wanted to show some of the fine details and attention to detail that goes into designing every aspect of the world and a great example is the buildings of Hyboria! To be more specific in this instance the buildings that players will find in Cimmeria, the birthplace of Conan himself.

    Go check out those huts!

Next on our tour of Conan is the Forum Competition.

Ready to show off your creative writing skills? Find out more about our great forum competition.

Now is your chance to show the Age of Conan community your creative works! We are looking for a story about a character you will play or a character living in Hyboria. The top 3 creative stories selected will be allowed to set their own custom forum usertitle*!

Your story can include several things including how you came to Hyboria, what your current profession is, any major events in your life that affect what you do now, childhood memories, your friends, your lifestyles, and lots more.

    The rules are simple...

    * Your submission must be about a civilian in the Hyborean world and you cannot portray your character as a hero.

    * Your submission must stay in the theme of the Age of Conan. (i.e. no cars, planes, computers, etc..).

    * Your submission must not be tied to any major storyline characters or alter or influence change in the main storyline of REHs works. (i.e. You cannot be cousins with Conan and have a latte with him every Tuesday down at Tortage Coffee Shop).
    * Your submission must be 700 words minimum and only one submission per person will be considered. The only accepted formats are Text Files (.txt) and Rich Text Files (.rtf) only.

    * You must be registered with the Age of Conan Forum located at and your account must be in good standing.

All submissions must be recieved by June 9th, 2006 to [email protected] with the subject: Character Biography Contest - [Forum Name]

Winners will be chosen and announced by June 16, 2006.

Unfortunately you can count me out of this one. My writing skills rival the slowest first grader.

Last but not least, our favorite Barbarian will be making an appearance at this year's DragonCon.

t's that time of year again as we make our annual visit to Dragoncon and invite players along to join in the fun!

We are delighted to confirm that we will be attending the Dragoncon convention in Atlanta in September and will again be having a player gathering for people to come and meet us and chat about the game and join in on some competitions and fun!

There will be members of the development team there to answer your questions and join in the fun!

If you are attending and want to reserve a place at one of our evening gatherings please send an email to community@anarchyonline with the subject line “Dragoncon gathering” with your name and details. Space will be limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

Dragoncon is a great convention and a whole lot of fun and we look forward to seeing you all there!

So much goodness that I'm spent!

  • The E3 content continues to fly all over the net. Youv'e read what we had to say here at Ten Ton Hammer. Now, you can see what the other guys think.

Under the leadership of veteran Game Director Gaute Godager, the team is aiming to craft an interpretation of the famed property in which the key combat element will involve actively aiming your attacks, eye-catching combos plus finishing moves like decapitation, and an appropriate overall feeling of pace. This appears likely to attract gamers who express the desire, often quite vociferously, to feel more directly engaged in the battles. Another unusual and interesting element is the ability to form and lead a squad of NPCs. The title was showcased as being optimized for the Vista operating system; along with the striking visuals we've seen, this indicates Age of Conan will be very competitive on the technological front. As well, the art direction appears to do a credible job embodying the fundamental spirit of the underlying franchise.

  • E3 First Looks: Age of Conan

Karen Hertzberg set out on an epic journey to Funcom's Age of Conan booth to find out if there's life in the 1930s pulp comic turned 1982 cult film turned 2007 MMO. Is it a life of wine, women, and brutal decapitation, or will players find themselves chained to the oars on a sinking ship, figuratively speaking? Check out Karen's article to find out!

"Characters begin their life in Hyboria as one of three races--a Cimmerian, an Aquilonian, or a Stygian--rowing away on a slave ship, decked out in rags. For the first five levels you are a “commoner.” Then at level five you choose your base class from four archetypes: Mage, Priest, Thief or Warrior. Godadger demoed his character receiving a quest from an NPC, complete with voice-over. Then he drew a massive, ornate broadsword from a nearby table (a very real-looking sword, nothing like the inflatable ones I’ve seen handed out at the Funcom booth—I’m still bitter about not receiving one), and said to the media seated in the room, “Who wants to help me demonstrate combat? I promise I won’t decapitate you or anything.”

  • ToTheGame has an interview with an undetermined Funcom employee about their upcoming MMORPG Age of Conan.

    3. Funcom is responsible for breaching the MMORPG world with Anarchy Online, the first massive online game focusing on the future instead of the traditional medieval genre. Now, with Hyborian Adventures, you’re taking a step back into a lost civilization. What made the team consider such an idea?

Well, we are just about to complete our take on the ages, with Age of Conan being at the end of the fourth age, Anarchy Online being in the sixth age, and our next online RPG being in the fifth age?. No, seriously, we had always wanted to make a fantasy RPG, and once we could start to free resources of Anarchy Online and Shadowlands, fantasy was the direction we first started looking towards. Not only did we have lots of internal motivation for such a project, but we were also “lucky” enough to get hold of a great license. And the more we dived into the Hyborian age, the more we understood how incredibly diverse the license was. It’s a far shout from the run-of-the-mill Elves, Orcs and Dwarves fantasy universes which surrounds us everywhere these days. In Conan almost everything is twisted and dark, and more than anything humankind itself is at the centre. True, there are evil demons, gods and monsters lurking everywhere, but the humans are the “rulers” of the world. This allows us to make a very different and more brutal and realistic fantasy experience, far from what you have experienced in any Online RPG before.

You can bet that anything that Funcom makes will be good. I still stand by my statement that Anarchy Online was one of the best MMORPGs ever designed.
