A great and terrible peak, its sides streaked the color of drying blood, its summit capped in stiff snow, looms at the heart of the Misty Mountains. The Dwarves call it Barazinbar. The Elves named it Caradhras. But it is best known by its common-tongue appellation: the Redhorn.

Far below the peak—beneath its namesake pass, below and between the gates of mighty Khazad-dûm, in the roots of the mountain—the Dwarves mined the ruddy stones of the Redhorn. They cut through rock and ore, dug out shining gems and lustrous veins of metal, laid down iron rails, and built up noble mansions. They hollowed out a hole in the mountain and left it hollow.

Known now as the Redhorn Lodes, this expanse of plundered stone is seen by melancholy Dwarves as a symbol of Moria’s exhaustion. The high and fog-shrouded Redhorn has a reputation for wrath and ruthlessness, so much so that it is sometimes called Caradhras the Cruel. These Dwarves grumble that the ancient miners cut out the heart of the mountain, and so all of its blood—its veins of precious mithril—dried up. They claim that the mountain itself turned on the old Dwarves of Khazad-dûm, and they wonder aloud if the arrival of Durin’s Bane was just one part of the Redhorn’s revenge.
