Who doesn’t love Middle Ages-themed entertainment? The huge success of Game of Thrones, currently in its 7th season, is evidence enough: most of the hit HBO series story arcs are based on real events that took place in Medieval Europe. And gaming certainly is no stranger to the medieval frenzy, as countless games and genres out there feature a medieval theme - more so in the 21st century than the late 20th, for sure.

The Middle Ages Events Revisited by an Assassin

Assassin’s Creed series is perhaps one of the most well-known representatives of the genre – recently also made into a movie, starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard. The games revolve around the struggle between two rival secret societies, the Assassins and the Knights Templar. The main character, Desmond Miles, assumes the powers and skills, along with the memories and past experiences, of several of his ancestors, which allows the player to move through time as Desmond takes on different identities. Although it is not only set in medieval times (the latest instalment, Assassin's Creed Origins, is set in Ptolemaic Egypt) and technically also set at the borderlines between the Middle Ages and Renaissance or in medieval times but at a Middle East setting, Assassin’s Creed deserves a top spot on our list just because of the accuracy with which historical events are depicted.

Medieval Fantasy Worlds to Explore

But if you are looking for something more medieval fable than historical accuracy, then Baldur’s Gate or World of Warcraft are probably more up your alley. Both are medieval-themed in the sense that they are loaded with dragons, elves, wizards and warriors (although WoW can also feature werewolves and spaceships). Both games take you to a world inspired by the Middle Ages but with a fantasy spin, where you can choose a fantasy character and explore a map, complete quests and engage in battles to gain experience points that allow you to move through the game.

In that same genre of fantasy medieval worlds, the Elder Scrolls series definitely deserves to be mentioned, and in particular Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. In that game series, you navigate the open-world environment of Skyrim, roaming around towns, villages, dungeons and castles, engaging in combat by yielding medieval weapons and casting magic spells – while Dragonborn even lets you ride dragons.

Classic Games with a Medieval Twist

Yet it is not only video games which are originally set in the Middle Ages that would appeal to medieval times enthusiasts. There are several classic games that come with a medieval twist, to satisfy all tastes. For example, you can find medieval games like Avalon slots on online casinos – complete with King Arthur inspired scatter and wild symbols, like a Lady of the Lake scatter symbol and an Avalon Castle wild symbol, along with high-paying ones like the King’s Crown or the Avalon Crest. You might also be excited to learn that there is a medieval title in the popular Sims series – appropriately called The Sims Medieval. It allows you to build not just a household, but a whole kingdom, send your Sims on quests, and explore new gameplay elements like religion, armed combat, and Sim characters like monarchs, knights, wizards – or even bards!

So whether you are more into hardcore fantasy gaming or looking for easy-to-play games in a medieval setting, there is something out there for everyone.
