World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria
Patch 5.1 is a few weeks out and most of us have had ample time to
get out and experience most of what this new patch has to offer. As
with most patches, the content found in Patch 5.1 is a combination of
things that players either seem to love or hate. However, often times
the bad stuff gets focused on more than the good. This article
strictly focuses on the good and reflects on some of the best things
found in Patch 5.1.

Battle-stones

If you have read any of my past
articles you are well aware that I love Pet Battles. Even though I
cannot dedicate as much time as I wish to them, I still think Pet
Battles are one of the best additions ever to be introduced into the
game. So imagine my excitement to see all the cool changes coming to
this niche of the game in Patch 5.1. While I love all the changes and
additions that 5.1 brought to Pet Battles, one stood out above the
rest; Battle-stones.

Battle-stones are nifty little objects
that can be used to upgrade the quality of Battle Pets and are the
answer to many a player's prayer. Finally players have the ability to
upgrade their favorite pets using a fairly easy method. The best part
of the deal? Battle-stones are not soulbound, which means after you
have upgraded all your pets, you are free to sell Battle-stones on
the Auction House to make a cool profit.

Item Level Upgrades

Nothing is more frustrating than having
a really great piece of gear, only to notice that the item level of
the piece leaves a lot to be desired. Patch 5.1 has remedied that
problem with the addition of several new Ethereal NPCs located in the
Pandarian faction capitals. These upgrades won't even cost you any of
your hard earned gold, instead players can use any leftover Valor,
Honor, or Justice Points they have sitting around collecting dust.
The only drawback of this is that items that have had their item
level improved can no longer be placed into Void Storage. However, I
think this is a small price to pay in the grand scheme of things and
the ability to upgrade the item level of your gear sits firmly on my
list of good things introduced in Patch 5.1.

Pandaren Campaign

The whole idea behind the Mists of
Pandaira expansion is this ultimate conflict between the Alliance and
the Horde. While the initial release gave us a taste of things to
come, it left us wanting more. Patch 5.1 allows us to delve a bit
more into the storyline with the introduction of a brand new quest
line taking place in the Krasarang Wilds. These quests spearhead the
effort to summon massive war fleets from both factions to the shores
of Pandaria and really gives players the feel that war is coming and
coming quickly putting this new campaign firmly on my list.

Stranglethorn Vale Fishing Extravaganza

The Stranglethorn Vale Fishing
Extravaganza was an epic fishing tournament where once a week players
could pit their Fishing skill against other players to win prizes.
Sadly, this contest, along with the Kalu'ak Fishing Derby, was
removed from the game and it was anyone's guess if they would ever
return. While it appears that the Kalu'ak Fishing Derby may be gone
for good, Patch 5.1 has reintroduced the Stranglethorn Vale Fishing
Extravaganza. Available every Sunday, this competition makes an
otherwise rather mundane profession, exciting.

Brawler's Guild

While breaking the don't talk about it
rule of the Brawler's Guild may have severe consequences, it is to
great an idea not to talk about. A haven for PvE enthusiasts, the
Brawler's Guild allows players to pit themselves up against some of
the most challenging monsters in game all in the presence of a live
audience. While tickets seem to still be pretty exclusive, the
Brawler's Guild is a great alternative to raiding or other PvE
activities and could even potentially appeal to those who generally
prefer PvP.
