No word on an Age of Conan winter holiday event, but we're still on the Christmas card list.

Earthrise is set to begin closed beta next month, though the announcement reads like its just a continuation of the family & friends alpha that the game has been in for some time. Nevertheless its excellent timing for the story-driven post-apocalyptic MMORPG since many Fallout 3 diehards have undoubtedly already made their way from Vault 101 to Project Purity and will certainly welcome something in F3's likeness to look forward to.

On the fantasy front, Warhammer Online patch 1.1b was delivered yesterday with a number of elder game fixes. Not to be outdone, patch 1.1c is being delivered as this message finds its way to your inbox.

1.1c will also bring the second Warhammer Online holiday event to the servers: Keg End. Keg End joins EverQuest's Frostfell, EverQuest 2's Frostfell (it's nice to see holiday traditions survived the shattering), and World of Warcraft's annual Winter Veil event.

Halloween events now lead Christmas events by almost two to one. Another outcome of bad economic times, or is society eroding at a conspicuous rate? Maybe we'll all be playing Earthrise for really real soon enough. For the counterpoint, if you emit a low, gutteral "bah humbug" at the holiday events, Ten Ton Hammer's Dalmarus has an op/ed just for you, Get Your Holidays Out of My Games.

Anyway, most or all run well into January, so you have plenty of time to get the goodies even if the hap-happiest season of all is also your busiest time of the year.

If EVE Online ran a special Christmas EVE event, what would it look like? Here's my scenario: Santa will be piloting a freighter through deep space delivering presents to the Sisters of EVE children's hospital protected by his 9 reindeer, eight of the faction navy's finest plus something a little more special - Jovian, perhaps, to account for that whole glowing thing - for Rudolph.

Attacking him results in a yearlong security hit (you made the naughty list) and a chance for the t3 goodies inside the sleigh, but defending him assures you of a gift come Christmas day. Anyway, I'd give it about 30 seconds before the kill sheet showing Santa was podded by -=MiSTerR8pist=- becomes the prize of the Interwebs. Maybe this is why CCP isn't much for holiday cheer.

What's your pick for the holiday event of the year, or are you your own private Scrooge? Post it in the Loading... forum, or my inbox is always open for comments.

Shayalyn's Epic Thread of
the Day

From our WAR: General Discussion Forum

Soooo...

Days,
weeks, or months after any game launches our forum community sees its
share of "I quit" threads, in which some once-idealistic fan feels the
need to write up a laundry list of reasons why he's taking his toys and
leaving the sandbox. Such posts are usually met by turns with
agreement, dissent, or the ever-present plea:  "Can I have your
stuff?"

Slightly less pervasive, but perhaps more helpful, are
the posts on the opposite end of the spectrum--the "I'm back" threads.
MorbidMagnus posted one such thread declaring that he gave Warhammer
Online a second chance, and liked the changes that have been made to
the game during his hiatus. If you're considering going back to WAR, this thread might be the nudge you need.

Awesome Quote from the
Epic Thread
:

"I'm glad you posted this Morbid. I left about the same
time as you and have been wondering how the changes have effected the
gameplay. My main reason for leaving was the lack of ORvR and the fact that I
despised scenarios. Sounds like maybe that's been addressed
?"
