Today I deliver to you a short and sweet Friday.
The short part is my contribution. We all have heroes. Sometimes we just don't know it until they are gone. It was two years ago today, while I was attending E3 in Los Angeles that my grandmother passed away. With that in mind I won't write much today other than this column is for her.
The sweet part is what I like to call 'Getting Personal'. The Ten Ton Hammer staff came up with some questions of a personal nature and fired them off to our favourite developers. First to answer the call was Erling Ellingsen, the Product Manager for Age of Conan.
Ten Ton Hammer: What brand of computer do you use?
I built it myself, thankyouverymuch! At work I use a Dell computer, though. Quite a decent little thing.
Ten Ton Hammer: If you could live anywhere, where would you live?
I love my Norway. I'm a true viking patriot. But a social anthropologist once labeled me an escapist because I said I wanted to live on a deserted island somewhere. I would quite like that, really.
Ten Ton Hammer: What is your favorite food?
Kebab. Yes, I know it's not very sophisticated, but it's damn good. Especially at 3 AM on the way back from a terribly exciting party.
Ten Ton Hammer: What brand/model of vehicle do you drive?
I drive a Skoda Octavia, 1997 model. Love it! But I do miss my old BMW. There is no car quite like the BMW, and they're quite common over here on this side of the pond.
Ten Ton Hammer: Who is your favorite industry personality?
Richard Garriott. A true genius, and a man who have accomplished so much for the industry. I also quite appreciate his eccentricities.
Ten Ton Hammer: When was the last time that you cried?
A few days ago when I watched "Schindler's List" again for the millionth time. I easily cry over movies, art and other man-made creations that has an effect one me.
Ten Ton Hammer: Do you have pets? If so, what are they? Names?
I used to until quite recently. It was a cat and her name was Frøya. A Norwegian Forest cat!
Ten Ton Hammer: The time you remember most when a teacher yelled at you.
Ah, we were doing a school-play in elementary school and I refused to play the role assigned to me, so she dragged me out on the hallway by my hair. I was quite rebellious as a child!
Ten Ton Hammer: Favorite candy bar
That must be the Norwegian chocolate "Stratos". I have no idea what that could be comparable to in the US -- you guys have so much candy there!
Ten Ton Hammer: What games did you play in the last week?
Grand Theft Auto IV and nothing else! And, of course, also quite a bit of Age of Conan!
Ten Ton Hammer: Favorite Cereal
Kellogg's Corn Flakes, though my breakfasts are usually more traditional. Bread, cheese and so on. Typical European sort of breakfast.
Ten Ton Hammer: What are your hobbies?
Traveling, photography, writing, singing, and of course gaming. I like to think of myself as quite creative, though I'm sure I'm not any good at any of it.
Ten Ton Hammer: Where did you grow up?
I grew up in a small town called Vennesla all the way down in southern Norway. A nice, green place with about 15,000 inhabitants. I miss it!
Ten Ton Hammer: What is the last YouTube video that you watched?
Ten Ton Hammer: What is your favorite TV show?
The Sopranos! I just finished watching through all the seasons. I am very fascinated by the mafia, and the way they turned them into "real" people was very interesting. Favourite character was, besides Tony himself, Christopher.
Ten Ton Hammer: Oprah or Springer?
Oprah -- though I watch neither.
Ten Ton Hammer: Dogs or cats?
Dogs, actually, though my last pet was a cat! I think I need to settle down a little bit before I take on the responsibility of a dog.
Ten Ton Hammer: What is the first MMOG or MUD that you ever played?
Ultima Online was the first graphical ones, but I remember playing old BBS adventures that I do not remember the name of at all. Ah, got to miss phoning into a BBS and playing in a text client!
Ten Ton Hammer: You have been chosen to represent the human race, aliens pick you up and bring you to their leader, your first sentence is?
Where can I check my e-mail? What? You no speak English? Kanskje norsk? Ok. Where can I find the nearest language instructor? Hm, this is going to be quite difficult. *hand movements*
Ten Ton Hammer: Benny Hill...genius or idiot?
I would say a genius. Any man who can create comedy that makes me laugh is a genius to me.
Ten Ton Hammer: Favorite Looney Tunes line....
I think I saw a pussy cat!
Ten Ton Hammer: What is the first game that you ever worked on?
I used to be a journalist before I came here to Funcom, so it has to be Age of Conan. But I did a little bit of work on Lost Eden, the expansion to Anarchy Online as well.
Ten Ton Hammer: Coffee or Tea?
Tea, no doubt about it!
Ten Ton Hammer: Cake or Pie or Pi?
Ten Ton Hammer: What is your favorite sport to watch?
Ten Ton Hammer: What is your favorite sport to play?
Thanks To Erling for his witty and expedient answers! Have a great weekend everyone. My next Loading... will come to you from Norway.
