Welcome to this twenty-third day of March, 2015.   I’m John “Boomjack” Hoskin and this is Here Comes The Boom – EP #35.

Which Game Universe Has The Best Lore and Back-story?

It's a loaded question and truthfully, there is no right answer, but rather many of them.

I give to you, dear reader, a list of gaming universes that I consider to have long, storied and most of all interesting storylines.

Your job is to tell me, which one you consider the  most compelling.

In no particular order, because, well, that would just offend somebody, I will give you my personal "Big Three", followed by other game worlds that have touched my life.    Which one would you consider the deepest and most compelling?  Is it even on my list?

Star Wars

Few game universes have as long and deep a canon as Star Wars.   With games going all the way back to the Atari 2600 and ColecoVision.

Star Wars not only has a long history in gaming, but one that crosses  genres, even stepping into the blocky, clicking land we call Lego.

My first Star Wars game was on the Atari 2600.  It was such a great title that it was able to curb my River Raid addiction.   My last Star Wars game, which I am still currently playing is SWTOR.

Star Trek

Super Star Trek ran in Basic.  That's older than most of the people reading this column.

The original television series grabbed hold of viewers and to this day has never let them go as witnessed by the outpouring of affections for Leonard Nimoy on his recent passing.

My first Star Trek game was on the VIC-20; anyone remember those?  My last Star Trek game was Star Trek Online (which I should go back to and try again).  My next will be Star Trek: Timelines.

Warcraft

It began as a universe living and breathing in the real-time strategy game genre, but later moved into MMORPGs via World of Warcraft and more recently into online card gaming with the introduction of Hearthstone.

One of the most popular universes in the history of gaming, spinning off numerous novels, comics, manga, even its own magazine for a short time and now a movie, Warcraft has touched millions of lives across the planet.  My children learned to read playing WoW.  I learned to love RTS again playing Warcraft III.   Thank you Blizzard.

Other game universes that have made our lives richer.

  • Mass Effect
  • Dragon Age
  • Dungeons and Dragons
  • Zelda
  • Elder Scrolls
  • Halo
  • Warhammer (40K and Fantasy)
  • Runescape
  • Dungeons and Dragons
