More on Ten Ton Hammer

EverQuest II (commonly abbreviated EQII) is the official continuation of the world and storylines introduced in the original EverQuest that was released in 1999. Following along the same lines as its predecessor, EQII is set on the fantasy-based world of Norrath, which is the home to a variety of different creatures and beings that fight for good or evil. EQII features all of the playable races of the original EverQuest, including a few additions (the Fae and the Ratonga), and many of the settings of the original game. EQII also follows the pattern set by EverQuest in that it focuses on player versus environment (PvE) combat rather than put any sort of focus on PvP. There are a set of PvP servers, but the main focus of the game is on PvE.

Originally, players merely selected a archetype at the beginning of their adventuring, choosing to be either a Fighter, Scout, Priest or Mage. As character progressed, they were then allowed to choose divergent classes that specialized them into a variety of roles. In January of 2006, the system was changed so that you selected your final class during character creation. The final list of classes that are in the game are: Berserker, Guardian, Paladin, Shadow Knight, Monk, Bruiser, Troubadour, Dirge, Ranger, Assassin, Swashbuckler, Brigand, Fury, Warden, Templar, Inquisitor, Mystic, Defiler, Wizard, Warlock, Conjurer, Necromancer, Illusionist, and Coercer.

Since release six expansion/adventure packs have been released that expand the content in the game. With the most recent expansion, the newest player race, the Fae, was introduced. One of the most interesting additions to the game is the use of actual voices for NPCs. The actors used for these parts included well-known Hollywood stars such as Heather Graham (as Queen Antonia Bayle) and Christopher Lee (Overlord Lucan D'Lere). Actor/gamer Wil Wheaton and actor/mathematician Danica McKellar are also part of the cast. According to SOE in October 2004, EverQuest II featured 130 hours of spoken dialog recorded by 1,700 voice actors. More dialog has been added since release as part of regular game updates as recently as July 2006. EverQuest II introduced Player Voice Emotes with the launch of EverQuest II: Desert Of Flames in September 2005.

EverQuest II also employs a Station Exchange store that allows players to buy certain goods for the game.

As of August 20th, 2010 Sony Online Entertainment implemented a new free-to-play server option with the launch of EverQuest II Extended, providing a way for players to play the game for free and buy items they want through microtransactions.

  • A world filled with pseudo-Eqyptian themes

SOE shows off its planned mid-September Everquest 2 expansion with a new movie: "A World Filled with Danger." No "stranger danger" like they taught us about in grade school though; we're fairly certain a djinn will not float up on a spacious flying carpet and offer you candy.

{Ed. note: no description given, just lots of dangerous looking creatures like a evil genies, chromed out dragons, Greenpeace protesters, and Vin Diesel.]

The newest DoF movie, now live on the Everquest 2 "Desert of Flames" site in the "Media" section.

  • "HO" isn't just something you yell at the double dutch bus!

EQ2 players know that a Heroic Opportunity is a set of coordinated group-member actions that, if properly completed in a short amount of time, lead to damage bonuses or heals and buffs for the group, though Neddie Seagoon (understandably) describes the process as a "Hopeless Opportunity. A game device whereby a group is instructed to execute an elaborate series of spells in the heat of battle demanding the intricate timing and delivery of the Cirque de Soleil acrobatic corps, while actually flailing at the keyboard with all the co-ordination, planning and dignity of a frenzied bunch of cornered raccoons. A cruel practical joke courtesy of the EQ2 designers."

Well, stay with me friends, but I think Lycanthor just helped HOs enter the EQ2 realm of combat possibilities...

After shopping around for a good, up-to-date Heroic Opportunities reference, site contributor Lycanthor of Highkeep server found that there simply wasn't one anywhere! Did he turn around and walk away from the gaping hole in that crucial pile of maps and reference data we keep close at hand while playing EQ2? Heck no! He developed his own graphical HO reference and asked us to help him spread the good news! Our thanks to Lycanthor for a superbly done HO guide, we're pleased as punch to host your fine work!

"Heroic Opportunities are free damage, power, health and other buffs- so why not use them? Lycanthor of Highkeep has created an easy-to-follow guide to allow you to execute and switch out HOs effectively. Print out the 1-page guide for sessions with large groups, or the individual pages for a detailed look at your archetype's triggered HO possibilities!"

  • Who needs Korea when EQ2 has "Combat Changes"?!
The infamous "Combat Changes" loom on the EQ2 horizon, making a number of folks restless. This week's pseudo-therpeutic, semi-humorous, 100% fun column walks one quavering Warden through the early stages of acceptance and previews some of the changes too! Then the article quickly quickly gets out of hand as yours truly discusses my proposed "Combat Changes!" Check it out!

"Of course, the Star Wars Galaxies veterans (well, at least the ones that left the game to play EQ2) started having sweaty flashbacks when they heard that SOE was out to redo the pummeling procedure in their newfound home. As things in EQ2 are in no way as bad as SWG was in the pre-CU days (where botting was the new ganking, and you and your friends could eat the nastiest PvE mobs alive with ease with the right combination of armor, weaponry, and buffs), we'll likely not see what many considered a total over-reaction that threw the entertainers out with the bathwater. And let's spend a moment in eulogy of the Hutt dancers, cantina musicians, and other ways the SWG revamp chagrined its pure artisans. SWG sought to be as novel as the 70s cultural phenomenon that spawned it, and SWG's "Combat Changes" in many ways returned the game to its MMOG roots at the expense of entertainer as an viable and attractive subclass offering. EQ2 is pretty down-home-comfort in its RPG approach. So in EQ2 née SWG, there were fewer points of contact for play imbalances and player malignment in the first place."

  • A Treasure Chest! Or, maybe just an update. You decide.
Sony Online Entertainment has posted the latest EverQuest 2 Treasure Chest. At the mention of a treasure chest the TTH offices became infested with pirates. Ninjas were called in to remove the infestation, but all we could get out of them was this:

"Sometimes it's hard to find the buried treasures contained within the EverQuest II forums. The Treasure Chest highlights useful, insightful, or entertaining posts that you may want to check out. Get your treasure maps and shovels ready--we're about to discover a Treasure Chest!

  • Take a tour and punt a gnome!

Cogglesworth's Tour of Norrath, Part 3 examines the zones that surround the two warring cities in EQ2. Included are some screenshots taken at such a high resolution that I could almost hear the computer cry out in pain over in San Diego.

Professor Cogglesworth is a gnome sage of some renown. While he is well-known for cataloging a compendium of legendary figures, he has also compiled a journal detailing the lands he and others have visited. The professor has gone to great lengths to compile accurate information, but it should be noted that some entries within this journal may not be entirely factual. Cogglesworth is an exceptionally intelligent scholar, but history and lore are sometimes a matter of perspective.

We continue today with two entries from Professor Cogglesworth's journal: Antonica and The Commonlands.

  • Virtualy Lucrative
CNet is reporting that Sony Online Entertainment has scored big with Station Exchange. Wall Street traders were too busy selling Paladins to talk to us, so we'll pretend that they said this:

" And judging by the results of Station Exchange's first 30 days of operation, during which the system saw more than $180,000 in transactions, quite a number of EQ2 players have cashed in on the exchange, which allows gamers to trade real cash for virtual items used in the game. "

  • EQ2 Conning Red
Computer Gaming World has reviewed EverQuest 2. Vin Diesel was responsible for most of the code in the original EverQuest. He was not responsible for the following:

" Enemy conning and simple quests may feel unsatisfying for more experienced gamers, but newbies will really appreciate the help that EQ2 gives every step of the way. From the moment those of you uninitiated in RPGs create your characters with simple class and race choices and board the "refugee boat" for your first in-game tutorial, you will feel sure of what to do. The tutorial explains step by step how to do everything from moving a character around to wielding a weapon, picking up loot, and talking to NPCs. Everything in the main Options menu is easy to understand and a newbie-friendly first quest introduces many city features, including your initial player housing. "

  • Who doesn't want a firebreathing Hellhound for a cuddly, playful little pet?
SOE's new "Visual Pet Guide" (and another guide for customizing the colors of your baby dragon) lets players get a quick glimpse of these creatures before they bring them home. I could only afford the "Ill-Tempered Humane Society Reject," and let's just say that, in some cases, it's better not to have a pet at all.

" There are many house pets available in EverQuest II, many of which can be purchased from your local pet store and a few that can be obtained through other means. Enjoy this visual guide to the various pets you can gain as faithful house companions in EverQuest II."

  • Level Your Fury, Fast and Furious(ly)!
Our newest EQ2 class guide is tailored to those young druids aspiring to be nature's nukers, the Furies!

"A Fury is a subclass of the Druid line of priests. Druids call upon the forces of Nature to assist them in battle. The two subclasses are Warden and Fury; of the two, a Fury is by far the more damage-oriented.  This means that although a Fury is still a healer, they concentrate more on direct damage to the mobs. They are still very good healers;  Furies use the Heal over Time (HoT) as their main line of defense, backed up by instant heals. Also the Fury gets some nice buffs to put on self and group members; some activate weapon procs; some are damage shields; some are for quicker power regen. Agility and Strength buffs will make your friendly tank your buddy for life.  A movement speed buff for the group and a group invisibility spell make a Fury much sought-after at higher levels. "

Take a looksee at the Fury subclass guide, now on the TTH EQ2 Community Site!
