    EVE Players greet the New Year

    At 20:44 this evening a new PCU milestone was reached when 22.020 EVE Players were logged in at the same time. CCP's hardware partners are working around the clock to deliver more power to the Tranquility cluster so that the regiment of one unsharded virtual world with no instancing can hold

    If you ask anyone what their favorite sci-fi / pvp type MMO is, Eve comes through as the final answer every time. It's worth checking out.

  • 17K Space Rats and Going Strong...
    EVE Online reached another peak concurrency record over the Thanksgiving weekend. While 17,000 online at once doesn't seem like much in light of WoWs millions, it's significant to see a smaller, older, truly unique game growing by leaps and bounds in its own way.

    At 19:45 on Sunday evening (2005.10.23) EVE players broke their own Peak Concurrent Player (PCU) record with 17.032 playing at the same time.

    This is only days after a highly successful installation of TMS RAMSAN 400 Solid State Disk Array virtually eliminating all Database related LAG in EVE Online.

    Joystiq is reporting that EVE Online is accepting ISK, the virtual currency of the game as payment for advertisement in the game's official magazine. Writers for the magazine will also be paid in the virtual currency.

    Those Icelandic miscreants we like to call CCP have announced the
    release of EVE Online: Red Moon Rising, a free expansion to the popular
    sci-fi MMOG.  Red Moon Rising will be available in December. 

    "CCP Games, an independent developer and publisher of
    multiplayer online games, today announced the public release of "EVE
    Online®: Red Moon Rising”, a new expansion to its highly successful
    fast-growing Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG)
    “EVE Online®: Exodus”. Red Moon Rising is scheduled for release
    December, and will be provided to subscribers free of charge.

    “Red Moon Rising is the last of the EXODUS chapters and is the

    CCP couples an announcement about an extensive server upgrade with a plea for in-game corporations to move their operations out of several heavily trafficked systems. This from the official site, and no, I wouldn't kid you about the source:

    " An Oursulaert native went on record, saying "They better fix the *bleep* *bleep* *bleep* jump *bleep* gates before I *bleep**bleep**bleep* and then some." He then shouted something incomprehensible at nearby Customs Officials, subtle foam beginning to assemble at the corners of his mouth as he finally became able to jump to the next system.

    Similar stories have been reported in systems like Nonni, Sobaseki, Inoue and Isaziwa. Wasona Binge reported that rush hour traffic was approaching "Clusterfu*bleeep* proportions." "

  • How do you say "party" in Icelandic?
    CCP has a lot in store for gamers at EVEfest later this month, Oct. 20-22. For a mere US$675, you too can get the complete package from Icelandair. Oh to be rich and speak a Scandanavian language or two. I've heard that Iceland's beautiful, not to mention an important NATO stronghold against the commies.

  • Ganking: All in Good Fun!
    CCP's EVE Online producer Nathan Richardsson comments on the uniqueness of the game among its "massively single player online" peers. When Gamasutra asked CCP to try out the moves on pages 3 and 14, CCP respectfully declined out of Icelandic modesty.

    "We fully understand the reason behind sharding, instancing and the PvE focus. A lot of players want this kind of experience and these tools are far more commercially viable to fully control the experience and content created. We however decided to take the more difficult path and try to take on those obstacles head-on. It certainly has a lot of unpleasant side effects and EVE will never be a mainstream game. We're complex, we're open ended, we're fully PvP oriented and you can lose six months work in a second. But we believe this is what makes EVE so unique and we're trying to follow this vision and principles as well as we can."

  • EVE defies the trends...

    Eurogamer ponders why, in a crowded genre rife with games undergoing a full-fledged identity crisis, EVE seems to have just the right balance between giving players what they want while not cheapening the experience- it seems you have to have something to do and something to lose!

    As if by way of illustrating what a cruel game Eve can be, I just lost a fight in my most expensive, well-to-do battleship only minutes before opening up this page to write these words. The ship is dust and I'm royally pissed off. Way more pissed off than I would be at dying in almost any other game. While other MMOs might have coddled me with just a bit of money lost, or a few XP as punishment for my pitiful death, Eve has created several hours of concerted work. It's a bitch.

    This might not sound like a good start for an upbeat analysis of Elite's (remarkably pretty) online cousin, but it's losses like this one that give the game its raw edge. Like the thrill of gambling, player vs. player combat in Eve is exciting because you could lose something palpable: the time it took to make the game-money that paid for that ship, along with all the shiny gizmos I kitted it out with. You feel that loss in your guts. And there are few games that can boast that.

    I don't think you'll be disappointed if you read the rest of this nifty Eurogamer review of EVE Online.

    Icelandic Developer Crowd Control Productions announced that the single-server, two-year old MMO topped a long-anticipated milestone: 15,000 users online at once. last evening (9/11), a Chinese ambassador wished to suggest his country's policies to control overcrowding, saying this:

    This evening at 19:40 GMT, EVE players raised their own Peak Concurrent User record to 15.209. Congratulations everyone! This was an truly amazing moment, thanks to all EVE players for making this possible.
