The unauthorized Firefly Universe Online may not be the only hope for fans waiting to see a Firefly-based MMOG. Earlier this week we reported on the closing of Firefly Online developer Multiverse and what was perceived to finally be the end of the Firefly Online MMOG. But Massively was recently contacted by a member of the Multiverse Foundation, who has expressed a desire to continue the development of the long-stalled Firefly Online project.

According to the report, the Multiverse Foundation has snatched up the game’s source code and if there is enough interest from fans, the team of mostly volunteers would like to move forward with the project.

If Firefly Online were to finally get the attention and development it needs to become a full MMOG, this would make quite a few fans happy. Of course, given the history of Firefly Online we’re not holding our breath. It is well on its way to becoming the Duke Nukem Forever of the online gaming world. But the question now is - will it ever make its release like the Duke finally did after all those long years, and if it does, will it be as disappointing?
