The exotic sword is one of the more powerful heavy weapons in the game, allowing you to quickly bash your way through enemies with a single swipe. Getting the sword though is not so easy, and involves several different quests that will take you from the Crucible to the Dreadnaught and back to the tower.

Your first step is receiving the legendary sword during the Taken King main story line. Once you have that the real work begins.

Step 1: Leveling the Sword

Before you receive the quest for the exotic sword you will need to buff the legendary sword you were given during the main storyline. It has to be infused until it has an attack power of at least 280, and it must have all of the perks unlocked.

Once all this is done you will be able to pick up the quest “Sword Re-Forged” from Shaxx in the tower.

Step 2: Kill 50 Majors (Yellow Bar) and 25 Guardians

Yes that’s an AND in there, you’ve got to kill 50 Major enemies (those guys with the yellow health bar) and 25 guardians in the crucible.

Strikes are a great source of major enemies so load up your favorite one and run it until you’re done.

The guardian kills will be up to your personal preference, but Rumble is always a good bet as it gives you the most targets to kill at one time. It should also be noted that the sword doesn’t have to have ammo for the kill to count. A kill with a hit from the hilt will count as well.

Step 3: Kill Escthar on the Dreadnaught

You can find Escthar in the Asylum on the Dreadnaught. You can find the Asylum just past the Founts area which can be reached via the door at the bottom right of the Mausoleum.

After dropping into the prison area from the founts, follow the path until you come to an area with three Major Boomers in front of a door. This is the door you’ve got to get through but there’s a trick that must be completed for it to open.

To open the door you must kill all three boomers within several seconds of one another. Have Your AoE super ability equipped or a rocket launcher and use it to blow them up after you’ve whittled their health down a bit.

If the door doesn’t open it means they weren’t killed fast enough, luckily leaving the area and re-entering cause them to immediately respawn.

The fight with Escthar is pretty straightforward. He has a shield that can only be brought down with your sword. When it’s down, you can damage him with any other weapon. In most cases you can take care of him with just your sword, so long as you have enough heavy ammo equipped.

Step 4: Collecting Materials and Solar Ability Kills

After turning in the previous step, you will be given the final leg of the quest, which requires that you gather “rare” versions of planetary materials. The material you require changes with whichever elemental damage type you chose for the sword I.E. you need Helium Filaments for the solar sword.

The only real way to gather the rare materials is by roaming around in patrol mode on whichever planet has your materials (Helium Filaments = Moon).

In the meantime You’ll have to get a bunch of kills using whatever super ability matches the damage type you chose for the sword. Any kills will do, so find a strike or area of a map that spawns large numbers of easy to kill enemies and get to work.

When all this is completed turn it in. Congratulations on your Exotic Sword!
