Humans are likely the most common race in the World of Warcraft. That may be because players feel most comfortable playing versions of themselves in a game. No mater the reason everywhere you look in Azeroth you are likely to find humans vying for control.
Humans in the World of Warcraft descended from the might Vykul of Northrend and fist settled Azeroth in small nomadic groups. There they wandered for thousands of years in small tribes until war with the trolls forced them to unify.
This unification and strengthening continued for a long time, eventually leading to the creation of several powerful independent human city-states. Those cities included Alterac, Dalaran, Gilneas, Kul Tiras, Lordaeron, Stromgarde, and Stormwind.
When the Orcs arrived on Azeroth war broke out again and Stormwind was destroyed. This led to Lordaeron becoming the seat of power and the human city-states joined forces to fight back the Orcs and became the Alliance. However after the war both Gilneas and Stromgarde split from the Alliance.
Times did not remain peaceful for long though, as the Lich King rose to power and destroyed Lordaeron and created the Undead. This was followed closely after by the invasion of Azeroth by the Burning Legion, and then the Third War as the new Lich King was chased followed to Northrend and defeated.
Even though humans are a young race by the standards of Azeroth, their ability to fight on through seemingly insurmountable odds has made them one of the most influential races in the shaping of the world.href="http://www.tentonhammer.com/node/233797" target="_blank"> src="http://www.tentonhammer.com/image/view/233797" alt="Elwynn Forest"

Map of Elwynn Forest
Humans start out in the forested area surrounding the capital city of Stormwind. This area is known as Elwynn Forest. The zone is more than just a forest though as there are farm fields, lumber mills, mines, and more. The whole zone works to supply the massive capital with food, water, and raw materials to keep it alive.
When you start your adventure as a human you will do so at the Northshire church in a small sheltered valley. From here you will expand out to help the small town of Goldshire, and then head east to assist several other settlements like the Tower of Azora and the Eastvale Logging Camp.
The zone also offers easy access to the Human capital city and therefore access to the rest of Azeroth. You can easily get almost anywhere from here, and since it is right next door to your starting location you can be on your way elsewhere faster than almost any other race in the game.
The zone will let you reach about level 10 before you head west to Westfall to further your exploration of the human zones.
Humans have several distinct racial abilities
including a few that really reflect the personality of the race. As of Mists of Pandaria the Human racial

Humans can be the following classes:
Humans have the option to be a great many classes and has racial abilities that help many of those classes. As either DPS or a tank class weapon specializations can help out quite a bit, while as a caster the extra spirit is also very nice. Where humans really shine though is in PVP since they essentially have a free PVP trinket with their Every Man for Himself ability, freeing up their trinket slot for something that offers additional stats. Lastly, never underestimate the extra reputation gained as a human as it allows you to gain access to reputation rewards faster than any other race.

The Human racial mount is a horse of course, and no they are not all named Mr. Ed. A horse is the standard mount because it just makes sense. On Azeroth, as in our own real world, the horse was one of the earliest domesticated animals used for transport, and since it works, why change it.
