CHAMPION CLASS OVERVIEW

.No,
sir, I will not sing the Queen song.

With flashing blades, heavy armor and an unquenchable
lust for blood and thrills, the Champion is the combat machine of the Lord
of the Rings Online
. The Champion wades headlong into battle with
reckless abandon, a staunch and fearless opponent of the forces of
shadow. Despite the Champion's rather rigid role in combat, they have a
great degree of versatility in how they can go about pursuing this -
they can wear heavy armor, use light or heavy shields for
sword-and-board style, wield powerful 2-handed weapons, or dual-wield.
They are one of the easiest classes to play out-of-the-box.

In a group, the Champion is the group's cannonball, hurled
into groups of enemy mobs to sow seeds of destruction, and is the
generally-preferred method of interrupting enemy inductions. Unlike
other classes, this role does not differ significantly from soloing.
The Champion's main job is more or less the same thing: attack
everything, kill or be killed. From start to finish, this is the
Champion's raison d'etre.

The Champion class is available
to every race except Hobbits. Race of Man, with increased Might and
Fate (for increased damage and in-combat power and morale regeneration,
respectively) makes an ideal choice for a starter Champion. However, at
higher levels, no single
race has a
distinct advantage over any other, and any race is an acceptable choice
for endgame.

KEY
ATTRIBUTES

Champions are built for melee combat. Their primary concern is
converting power into outgoing damage-per-second, spreading it out
among multiple enemies. No other class is better at tearing through
groups of mobs quickly. Sure, Hunters and Runekeepers can hit bigger
numbers on single targets, but those classes are limited in their
abilities to take on hordes of mobs at once. The Champion spreads his
damage across many targets at once, consistently. And while Hunters and
Runekeepers work best at a range, the Champion can stand toe-to-toe
with the enemy, taking them down with brute force instead of cheap
run-and-gun tactics.

The Champion also has several options for fighting styles. With a
shield and a 1-handed weapon, he can fight defensively with
"sword-and-board" style and serve as an off-tank if needed, soaking up
damage as he dishes out even more. With a pair of 1-handers, the
Champion's DPS stream is consistent and relatively even, and lethally
fast. With a big 2-handed weapon, the Champion does big burst damage,
hitting staggering numbers in sudden spikes.

Might is the Champion's primary stat. It affects all the important
things the Champion does - damage, blocking, parrying. There is no
reason for the Champion not to boost his Might as high as possible
through gear and traits. Vitality is also very useful for increasing
the morale and boosting resistances to common debuffs. Champions also
benefit from having high Fate for increased in-combat power and morale
regeneration, and from high Agility for increased melee critical chance.

SECONDARY
CONCERNS

While Champions are heavy armor users, they do not have the
self-preservation skills of the Guardian or even the medium-armored
Warden, and a number of their skills reduce incoming healing. This
makes them poor choices for main tanks, even if the Champion is using a
shield. Champions work better as off-tanks, serving as emergency
backups for secondary tasks when the main tank is overwhelmed or kept
busy. For example, if the Minstrel is being attacked and the Guardian
is locked down with his tasks, the Champion can pick up the Minstrel
aggro and keep it until other arrangements can be made.

Champions can either get healed or do max damage, but not both. Fervour
stance, which increases outgoing damage and adds pips of fervour every
5 seconds, significantly reduces incoming healing. This can pose a
problem for a group's healer, who must spend additional power to keep a
Fervour-stance Champion standing. If the group's Champion starts taking
serious damage, he will need to quickly shift stances to something more
healer-friendly, or fall victim to his own hubris.

Because the Champion's strength is area-effect melee
damage, crowd-control may be more dificult with a Champion in the
group. Enemy mobs that need to be locked down for extended periods must
be kept well away from rampaging Champions, and group-spec Champions
need to develop some situational awareness to avoid breaking
carefully-planned mezzes.

IN SUMMARY

If you are new to Lord
of the Rings Online
, the Champion is an ideal choice for a
first character. This is the class to play if you enjoy charging into
the fray with
reckless abandon and swinging wildly at everything that moves. They are
incredibly easy to "pick up and play," do not require meticulous
planning or strategy at low levels, and play in a consistent, even
manner throughout the character's career. As the game progresses and
the character becomes more powerful, the style of play remains the
same, and they do not suffer the same jarring focus-shift when making
the transition from solo to group play that many other classes do.
Champion is a tough, aggressive class, and very fun to play.
