  • The Prancing Pony

The official site for Lord of the Rings Online has been updated with another installment of Exploring Middle-earth. This time we get a look at the Prancing Pony.

Upon arrival in Bree, weary travelers will want to make for the Prancing Pony, one of the town's oldest and most popular inns. The distinctive sign of a rearing, fat white pony marks the large building with its inviting arched entrance and pleasant courtyard, although it is likely that the sign will not be entirely necessary –as most seasoned travelers can direct those new to town to "The Pony," as is it commonly known.

  • Exploring Middle-earth: Bree

Another installment of Exploring Middle-earth is today's update to the to the official site for Lord of the Rings Online. Today we get a look at Bree.

At the intersection of the Great East Road and the North Road, the town of Bree has long stood as a gathering place for Men, Hobbits, and other travelers from the far-off lands of Middle-earth. Long ago, Bree was a thriving town, set against a large, sloping hill within the vibrant lands of Arnor.

  • Disambiguation

The official site for Lord of the Rings Online has been updated with a new Dev Diary. Nik Davidson offers this update titled Disambiguation...

Gundo's wounds were serious. The dwarves had beaten the poor hobbit soundly with maces and axes. He'd lost a lot of blood. The corpses of his friends littered the field, but he was almost in the clear. His heart was beating fast; he had sent several dwarves to their bloody end, and he could hear their angry yells behind him. He ran - ran as fast as his stubby little hobbit legs could take him, his hands white-knuckled, gripping the flag. At last, he crested the hill, and the great horn sounded. Victory! Victory, but at what cost?

Yeah, so that's what we're NOT doing.

When we announced there would be PvP in LOTRO, I knew some people immediately would come up with the above nightmare scenario. (Or worse. You guys are hella creative.) As such, we just sort of shook our heads as people concluded that we were turning our game into "HOBBIGEDDON: SLAUGHTER AT BAG END." Nothing could be further from the truth. What I'd like to do today is clarify what we mean when we talk about playing evil races, and PvP in LOTRO.

  • What Do The Players Think?

The official site for Lord of the Rings Online has been updated with snippets of some of the Alpha tester's journals. Keep reading to find out...

Neither rain nor sleet nor nosey hobbits...

I must begin this entry by first stating a personal bias – quite simply, I love the shire as Turbine has created it for Lord of the Rings Online. From the gently rolling hills and lush farmsteads to the low stone walls and fields of flowers; from the quaint round hobbit-holes to the cobbled paths that wind their way across the land- the shire is beautifully and appropriately rendered at every turn. And at no time is that statement truer then when one considers the substance and nature of the quests that are presented to a fledgling hobbit adventurer in The Lord of the Rings Online.

  • Exploring Middle-earth: Sandyman's Mill

The official site for Lord of the Rings Online has been updated with a new edition of Exploring Middle-earth. In this edition we are given a look at Sandyman's Mill...

It cannot be said that Mr. Sandyman, the old and always opinionated miller, is the most liked Hobbit in all the Shire, but the mill in Hobbiton run by generations of the Sandyman family, including Sandyman's son Ted, is nonetheless an important part of the tightly-knit community. Located on the north banks of the Water, the meandering river running its way through Hobbiton, "the Mill" as it is commonly (and simply) known, provides ground corn for the local Hobbits, as well as a pleasant place to sit along the gentle banks to enjoy a relaxing hour or three at the Water's edge.

Keep reading to learn more about Sandyman's Mill. Head over to LOTRO Ten Ton Hammer and let us know what you think of this spot. What are you looking forward to most when Lord of the Rings Online launches?

  • Exploring Middle-earth: The Party Tree

The official site for The Lord of the Rings Online has been updated today with another installment of Exploring Middle-earth! Today we get a glimpse at The Party Tree...

In a broad, open field in Hobbiton, not far from Bag End, there stands a majestic tree, taller than any within sight for miles. The Party Tree, as it is called by the Hobbits, is a gathering place for merriment, eating, and storytelling, where all Shire-folk are warmly welcomed. It was here that Bilbo Baggins celebrated his magnificent birthday (his eleventy-first), and it was from this location that some say he simply vanished from sight forever. Few are certain of the Tree's origins, and even fewer actually give its history a second thought. The Party Tree is decorated year-round with bright lanterns and yards of colourful woven streamers, for it seems logical to all Hobbits that a decorated tree is reason enough for a celebration -- why risk missing the opportunity for a feast by bringing down the festive arrangements? Besides, it's far too tall these days for Hobbits to reach the limbs, even if one had a mind to.

  • Turbine Releases Alpha Tester Impressions

The official site for Lord of the Rings Online has been updated with a page dedicated to sharing some impressions from the alpha stage testers. High marks seem to be all round...

So far, we're very pleased with how Alpha has been progressing. This week marked the largest number of concurrent players on the server since Alpha began, giving us a good starting point for analysis on how the game performs and plays. Despite heavier than expected logins, the servers remained stable and most players reported very few problems creating their character and beginning their adventure in Middle-earth. Even though there was a scarcity of wolves in the newbie hunting area (something that will be resolved in the next Alpha build), Archet was abuzz with excitement and activity.

We thought we'd take a moment to share some of the Alpha players' comments with you for some insight into what they think so far:

    * Writing is excellent so far, as are the characterizations. The model options are fantastic - giving you a very *real* seeming and very individual character.

Head over and see all the comments and learn how you can sign up for a chance at Beta! Share all your thoughts on Lord of the Rings Online with us at LOTRO Ten Ton Hammer and get to know the growing community better!
