World building tools designer BigWorlds made an announcement today regarding new web capabilities for their systems. In a world of outsourced systems, these functions could serve to benefit companies looking for solutions to their MMO game building technologies:

(New York, United States): BigWorld today announced at the New York Engage! Expo that BigWorld Technology 2.0 – to be previewed at GDC 2009, now includes web capability in addition to its normal array of client/server game technology and game/virtual world building tools. This new capability includes ‘Web Content Anywhere’ – the ability to have web content or browser-like functionality including Adobe™ Flash, Javascript/CSS or HTML on any 2D or 3D surface in-game. To complement existing mobile connectivity, licensees will also have access to social network integration encompassing Instant Messaging services, again – all in-game.

“The overlap between games and virtual worlds and social networks is not looming – it’s been here for some time,” noted Gavin Longhurst, VP of BigWorld “We have looked at pioneering efforts in the space – including those from our own customer base with virtual worlds like Metaversum’s ‘Twinity’ built on our core technology, and see the possibilities and flexibility to enable greater social connectivity and content injections into future games and virtual worlds. It’s about empowering developers to provide users the ability to communicate and share with each other with the ease and immediacy they find in the rest of their online experience. Tempered of course, within the context of that game, narrative or online virtual experience.”

Simon Hayes, CTO of BigWorld noted, “Not every game is going to need IM & web connectivity for instance, but the promise of connecting those in-world to content or people outside the world has huge potential for advertising, community management and creating links between users online and game experiences. The techniques we have used allow re-purposing of web content into the virtual or game world”

BigWorld Technology 2.0 will be showcased at GDC 2009 at the North Hall, Booth 6233, March 23-27, Moscone Center, San Francisco.
