Just the other day the Ten Ton Hammer authors were discussing major gaming conventions, and how we’re clearly in desperate need of even more of them. As things currently stand, there are entire weeks within the calendar year without a single convention, and that simply will not do.

Today, Twitch.tv came to the rescue with the announcement of the first official Twitch community convention: TwitchCon 2015. Running from September 25-26 in sunny San Francisco, CA, that puts TwitchCon smack in the middle of EGX 2015 (formerly known as Eurogamer Expo) which runs from September 24-27 this year.

Interestingly enough, there is some evidence indicating that TwitchCon could, in fact, be a smart move for the self-broadcasting behemoth. As Twich has become a staple presence at other top gaming conventions over the past few years, streamers of all walks of life have flocked to those events and crowded into the Twitch booth in escalating numbers.

At the recent PAX South, for example, it was nearly impossible to find standing room within the Twitch booth, let alone walk through or around the thing, due to the vast number of streamers in attendance. Another interesting point we witnessed is how isolationist much of the streaming community tends to be. Lower tier streamers were keenly interested in bumping shoulders with brand name streamers, and were rarely seen outside of the Twitch booth promoting their own brand.

To be fair, some of our favorite streamers such as SuperFancyUnicorn were also in attendance, and didn’t seem to be pulled in by the Twitch.tv tractor beam for the duration of the event. Still, a dedicated Twitch convention does mean that the streamers out there keenly interested in networking with other streamers will have a more clearly defined place and time to do so.

As described in the official announcement for TwitchCon 2015:

“Created as a celebration of all things Twitch, the convention will attract members of the Twitch community from all over the globe. Attendees will have the chance to mingle with each other and their favorite broadcasters, experience live content from the convention center, and learn from the community’s thought-leaders.”
