Free-to-play seems to be the latest craze in online gaming, and if a recent rumor is true, Blizzard may be adopting the increasingly popular model for their upcoming MMOG codenamed Titan. According to a report from Develop, a source inside of Blizzard has stated that the World of Warcraft developer will be applying the free-to-play model to its yet announced game. The source didn’t provide much more than that, so at the moment, this could indicate the Titan project, another unannounced title all together or simply be little more than a rumor. A Blizzard spokesperson declined to comment when questioned about the report.

As with all rumors, we recommend taking it with a grain of sal. But given the industry’s ongoing shift from subscription to the freemium model, it would not be surprising to see Blizzard making a model shift with Titan given all the higher quality free-to-play titles currently available and in development.

Blizzard COO Paul Sams talked about free-to-play briefly at BlizzCon 2011 in reference to WoW, but it was clear from his statement that Blizzard was not opposed to the concept.

“We don’t have any opposition to the concept, it’s just that at this point we haven’t decided to make a game where that is the model. But that doesn’t mean that we won’t.”
