  • Was Midas Chinese?
LotRO Source has posted an article on gold farming and the repercussions that the secondary market has on MMOGs.

"Selling gold in the gaming industry is like selling porn on the internet. Everyone claims not to do it, yet millions of real world dollars change hands each year. Game networks like OGaming are owned by companies that not only support this activity, but participate in it. Networks that do not participate in it still take advertising dollars from companies that sell gold. These are lucrative deals that make up much of these networks advertising income."

You can read the entire story at LotRO Source.

  • We're $292 million dollars poorer!

That was the take on online subscription revenues in 2005, according to research published by Cnet. Other fast facts - US PC game spending hit a whopping $1.4 billion in 2005. I guess PC gaming isn't the dying duck the analysts would've had us believe it was a year ago.

Faster Internet connections are making it easier for consumers to play games online and to download game content that had once only been available in stores, said NPD, which last year began tracking online subscriptions.

Subscriptions to play specific online titles--such as "World of Warcraft" from Blizzard Entertainment and Vivendi Games--reached roughly $292 million in 2005, with about 1.4 million paid subscribers.

Crunch the numbers on US PC game-related spending at Cnet.com.

  • RUN! It's a purple con 3 up-arrow Curt Schilling!

In a PR move that will most assuredly generate better karma than offering a year-long modeling contract to a real-life Queen Antonia lookalike, EverQuest 2 will soon boast a new in-game enemy that fights for charity, former MLB hurler Curt Schilling.
The World Series MVP and longtime EQ2 player will man a mob aptly named "Curt Schilling" and wander about terrorizing the playerbase. Every time he's defeated, SOE shells out a little more money to help fight ALS (also known as "Lou Gehrig's Disease").
Check out the "Curt Schilling and SOE fight ALS" press release right here. Then log on June 5th-7th and gank for a good cause, EQ2 players!

  • I know it's been a while since GDC but it's better late than never aye? I had a chance to sit with Daron Stinnett as well as Glen Dahlgren at the conference. We had a good talk about Perpetual's upcoming Star Trek Online. All of you trekkies out there rejoice! We're going to get a game done right!

They wouldn’t give up the central conflict of the game. No amount of begging and pleading on my part would reveal that secret. However, they had plenty of other goodies to give me. As you may already know, STO will be taking place after The Next Generation. The licensing deal with CBS (who now owns the Star Trek License) spans the entire Star Trek Library. They have the ability to use material from a broad range of sources extending from Star Trek (the series) to Deep Space 9 to Voyager. They’ve even gone as far as giving Perpetual scripts, footage, and production notes to enable them to create a solid Intellectual Property (or "IP" - an industry buzzword for the rights to the entire body of work, including patents and business methods, surrounding an idea that has commercial value, e.g. a game, motion picture, television series, etc.). While they haven’t been in touch with writers yet, they have been able to work with production designers for the shows. These meetings should allow the Perpetual team to integrate some really great content into the game.

  • This man is so engaging that he could probably sell a tract of cockroach infested land to me and I'd ask for more.

Another E3 has come and gone and the Tabula Rasa team comes home satisfied, enthusiastic, determined, energized and exhausted all in one. We spent three days showing the game to colleagues, press, and buyers and we feel that we have a great game on our hands. Those of us who didn’t make it to Los Angeles were in Austin working hard on the game or escorting, in game, the players that were logging on at the E3 floor. Those of us who did make it to Los Angeles participated in one of the best booths at the show. I would like to thank Mutaytor and Chris Vrenna for making our booth experience one of the best at the show.

One of the great things about E3 is watching how people play our game. We were gratified that anyone could get in and play the game without lots of instruction time, and the people that did play said that it felt right. When we made the decision to create an RPG with shooter style controls, we knew that feel was going to be very, very important. So, now we just have to finish polishing the game by making sure it runs well on lots of hardware, getting in the rest of the content and opening up the servers for Friends and Family testing.

So that’s it for this year. My final impression of Tabula Rasa at E3 is this: those that saw the game thought it looked beautiful and intriguing. Those people that played it had lots of fun and often stayed for hours, and that’s all you can ask for. I’ll leave you with some links that tell the story better than I will:

  • It's new, it's good. I'm talking about the weekly development activities. This is where you find out what the Turbine team is working on.

    Vendors and NPC's

    * The Jewelry and Clothing Pawnbrokers will be moving to the Marketplace Tent. Vendors selling non-magical consumable goods will take their place in the House shops.
    * We will be correcting some of the (now) incorrect NPC dialogue following the recent relocation of several quest NPCs.

These and more are in Q&A and will be available on the next update.

  • Little was "really" known about Tabula Rasa's new incarnation before GDC 2005. However, all of the good pulp free juice came from E3 concerning this game. Find out what "Lord British" has to say to Boomtown in this E3 interview.

n Tabula Rasa you don’t select a class when you’re creating your character.

    - It’s a very bad concept that players have to select a class as soon as they start creating their characters. You normally don’t know much about the game when you start out and the risk of making a wrong choice is big. In Tabula Rasa, if you aren’t satisfied with your character choices you can always go back to your clone, explains Richard Garriot.
