  • It's always interesting to read what happened to the dev's at E3. It's not long but amusing in it's briefness.

E3 from the Cave of Blackguard
Well, I’m officially back from E3 and in action again at work. It was a great E3 from my perspective, but this write-up may not be quite as interesting as you would hope because I lived in an isolated world this year--I probably walked around E3 outside of my booth for a total of two hours, but that’s okay because inside the SOE booth it was relatively quiet and comfortable.

  • Here's the scoop

    Hey All,

If you wander over to the ArchLord movies section you will find a delightful selection of two sneak preview videos of some ingame spells. I shall produce more compressed versions in the very near future.

So what you have today for your viewing pleasure is.

    1) An orc warrior out in the dessert, applying one of the many available buffs to himself.

    2) A human Archer, buffing his armour as he prepares to engage in fierce battle.

    Enjoy,

    Mr.Ktat

And Here's where you can find them.

Now I have to go find a way to get the Mini Me's out of my head.. It's hurts! It HUUUUUURTS!

  • I'm reading about this and on one hand I'm excited and on the other I keep thinking.. Hmm this sounds just like Dusktreaders. although set in the future.

FiringSquad: First, how did the idea for Dark World Online come about?

David Bowman: I was on a work/vacation trip with my family to British Columbia. It was the first time I had taken some personal time and gotten away from the daily running of Horizons. This allowed me to think freely about all of the genres and experiences that aren't currently available in persistent world spaces. It also allowed me to have some time to read, one of my greatest pleasures that I no longer get much time to do.

I knew that we didn't want to do another family fantasy game like Horizons at this time since we like what is happening with the game and the audience. Eve and Anarchy Online are currently doing a good job of entertaining people in the science fiction space. That eliminated my two favorite genres. So I went to my third and started reading the horror section of a great book store in Victoria. It quickly becomes aparent when reading horror that no single author dominates this space. I think that is partially due to the very long history of horror lore and the resulting depth and complexity of material. I looked at the material and the common themes that separated themselves from any single author were the sensuality, danger and mystery of the Vampires, the tragedy and ferocity of the Werewolves and the bravery and cleverness of the humans who have protected humanity from the monsters that prey upon us. I called several people at Tulga and bounced the idea around with them and they all responded with "I'd play that."

  • This is an interesting story on the social networks for MMO's. I happened across it today and you should take a look. You can read it all right here.

I just finished reading the awesome + amazing work of Nicolas Ducheneaut, Nicholas Yee, Eric Nickell, and Robert J. Moore. I imagine them as hyper-dorks at Stanford who built a scraper for analyzing social behaviors in World of Warcraft... only they got a little too high off of their MMORPG supply.

Just kidding. About the high part. They really did build a WoW scraper.

Their paper, "Alone Together?" Exploring the Social Dynamics of Massively Multiplayer Online Games (pdf) blew brain chunks out the back of my skull.

I've only read it through once, but came away feeling strongly that social networks, as they exist now, will soon be relics as new networks emerge that provide reward systems to enhance user experience with tools and recognition.

(also the paper made me wonder if social networks will become more immersive as well... is Second Life the future of social networks?).

As a social network hobbyist I recognize that this concept could exist in practice already. Forgive me if it's been done and be sure to point me to where and by whom.

On a side note... WoW is surely the worst game to study social networks considering there aren't any. Have you tried socializing on a mature level in that game lately?

  • I feel like this is De'ja Vu. Don't you?

In order to address an issue affecting realm stability, we have disabled pre-existing character transfers and templated characters on the public test realms. We have isolated the issue and we are currently working on a solution; however, until the matter is resolved character transfers will not be available.

  • You may know him as Rev. He's a developer at Flying Labs. His column at the Stranger made me laugh right out loud.

The booth babe up on stage at E3, the big video-game expo in Los Angeles, finally lost it. The throng of gamers with their cameras snapping pictures of her in a revealing fantasy costume, grabbing from the floor below at the T-shirts she was giving away, was just too much. "Vultures, VULTURES!" she yelled at them. "You're all a bunch of vultures!"

You should absolutely read the rest.
