  • Sphere rolls along

That the first Russian MMO just launched its first addon doesn't seem all that newsworthy; not that I don't wish them the best. But the "includes the game's version for portable platforms" part of this announcement picqued my interest. I knew the marriage of MMO and mobile was imminent, I didn't know it was here (and from a relatively unknown-to-the-west developer, at that).

The add-on is in DVD format and it includes the game's version for portable platforms. A colorful poster with a detailed map of the world of Sphere and a 2006 calendar are also included in the package. They really took the term "add-on" seriously.

Might this be another EVE Online, waiting a year or two to come sweeping over the Arctic circle onto the hard drives of a rabid cult following? Time will tell, but check out MMORPG blog's treatement of Spheres: Dreamscape in the meantime.

  • From the makers of DOFUS... WAKFU!

Ankama Studios, indie developer behind the cult MMOG Dofus, just announced a new expansion (Dofus - Arena) and a new MMOG in development (WAKFU) scheduled for late 2007. Ankama will show off both new creations at E3 in May.

If I understand correctly, players will destroy the environment while saving it:

In WAKFU, players will not only have to use the skills of their characters to fight a fierce fauna and flora using magic, martial arts or new technologies. They will also have to build cities in a virgin universe while preserving nature from destruction. Thanks to a universal and intuitive language, players will interact to create alliances or to take part in fights that will have a direct influence upon the universe.

We can only hope for same anime fun and blurry cartoon nudity found in Dofus (/cough). Want the full press release? Clique here, si vous plait..

  • New MMOG Magazine to hit newstands in May

Beckett Publishing, primarily known for their collectable magazines, announced it will publish an MMOG magazine scheduled to hit stores in late May, according to GamaSutra.

Scheduled for the end of May, the first issue will feature interviews, instance maps, questing guides, and articles on players’ interaction with various games, and will include input from Beckett Media as well as industry professionals and gamers.

I'm guessing PC Gamer's decision to remove gold ads in January created an ad/revenue vacuum for prospective mags. If there's one thing the media industry abhors, it's a vacuum.

Check out the entire article at GamaSutra.

  • So I swore off betas. Every time I've ever played one, I've become disapointed in the game and haven't played much longer til after the Beta. So, with that said ... it's KILLING me that I am not in the Vanguard Beta test yet. All I get is the second hand look at these new screenshots. They're good. I'm happy to see them but again ... it's KILLING me that I am not in Beta.

  • There is a serious Pirate fetish going on in our industry right now. Am I disapointed? Not really. I have a slight Pirate thing going on myself. However, enough is a enough! Square didn't think so because TA DA! New jobs introduced with the Treasures of Aht Urhgan expansion disc - Corsairs!

The valiant corsairs were once the scourge of the Near Eastern seas. Attired in a dignified frac and tricorne, and wielding the distinctive six-barreled weapon known as a "hexagun," any descendant of the legendary pirates is an impressive sight. Despite the positive whisperings of the corsairs’ actions and ideals in the streets of Al Zahbi, the Imperial Army seeks the corsairs' arrest on charges of insurrection. What tragic events lie in their past? And what secrets hide within the lighthearted games they play?

  • For some reason I've woken up with disco music playing in my head. It's a pretty far leap from what I usually listen to. Why am I telling you this? Because as I read this new Priest Archetype Preview for Age of Conan, I have KC and the Sunshine band running through my brain. Someone.. make the pain stop!

Priests in Age of Conan are a step beyond the stereotype of a vulnerable healer - they can call forth the power of their deities to smite and expose their enemies whilst protecting and aiding their allies! Whilst the priest is certainly the cornerstone of a good team in that they provide the vital restoration skills required to keep their allies standing in battle, they are so much more than that as well.

Priests draw on the strength of their faith and their abilities are derived from the power of their respective deities. Each god provides unique aspects to their followers, from the lethal poisons of the snake god Set to the elemental powers of nature itself harnessed by the Stormcaller.

On a better note, I just got Ten Ton Hammer's E3 appointment set up. Are you excited? I sure as heck am!

  • MMORPG.com has a 9 Dragons Developer Diary up. There's a little Kung Fu fighting, a little butt kicking and alot of a good information here.

There are generally lots of monsters wandering around and these can give adventurers a hard time on their own. But 9Dragons is special because there are also five clans of monsters with special powers of their own. They have their own unique background histories just like the Shao-Lin and the Wu-Tang!

There are five major monster clans in 9Dragons. They are the Clan of Secret Shadows, the Clan of Death Valley, the Clan of the King of Hell, the Clan of Beasts, and the Clan of the Golden War.

There is too much to say about these clans to fit it all in to one article so I have broken this up into two pieces. In the first I shall deal with the Clan of Secret Shadows and the Clan of Death Valley.

Can Acclaim bust into the genre with this game and overset it's previous difficulties? Only time will tell.
