  • Gamespot had the chance to interview "Lord British" and got some great tidbits on his thoughts of the industry and why he thinks that Tabula Rasa is going to break the traditional MMO boundaries.

S: Looking at the previous inductees to the Hall of Fame, pretty much all of them are still very active. At the same time, though, the Hall of Fame induction in most fields is kind of a career retrospective. I'm wondering if you worry or concern yourself at all that maybe your largest impact upon the industry has already been made.

RG: That thought has at least crossed my mind, and, interestingly, I don't think so. And the reason why I don't think so is because Ultima Online wasn't that long ago. You could have made that argument previous to Ultima Online.

I substantially believe that Tabula Rasa, the game I'm working on right now, is a dramatic departure from all other [massively multiplayer games] that have come before and will revitalize this segment again.

  • MMORPG.com is reporting that Serafina from World Fusion has sent out an email to the Atriarch community updating them on the progress of this MMORPG that has been in development for a number of years.

    Heya!

The roller coaster ride of waiting, of scarce updates, and of deadlines come and gone is probably disheartening. I wanted to email you personally and give you an update and status of what has been going on with Atriarch. I truly think of individuals waiting for Atriarch every single day. We are gamers too, and because of that can appreciate and respect you for it. So, here is the infamous good news/bad news Atriarch update:

Good News: Atriarch's Asian publisher re-emerged wanting to help us get Atriarch done faster. So, they are looking into getting their local talent to help us out with the gazillions of 3D models and artwork we need for the game and maybe some other aspects. We will be hearing back from them next week.

Bad News: This one is fairly obvious... although we are making progress, it is taking a very, very long time to get Atriarch done. In this respect, we are doing all we can given the tiny team and lack of funding. In the beginning, we said that even if our publishers explode or if things go bad for another reason (both of which happened), we would still follow through with Atriarch. And that we are!

Good News: Atriarch is and will continue to be.

You can read the rest of the letter here. Honestly I had completely forgotten about this game. They were a few years into development when I started in this career arena. Not much a peep since then. I hope that they can get it all together and launch soon.

  • Well 'tis the season and 1up has the exclusive info on what Blizzard plans to do for this day of love and mush.

In order to make any headway in this rose-colored endeavor, gamers will need to stock up on "Love Tokens" from Innkeepers, which apparently constitutes the currency of love during the event. Blizzard states, specifically, that "In each capital, most of the guards and a couple dozen townsfolk are infected with amore. Periodically, they will become "Amorous" -- you'll know this by the floating heart above their head. An Amorous NPC is receptive to gifts of love, specifically Love Tokens (purchased from innkeepers). In return for a Love Token, they will reward the player with their own gifts. Some of these gifts are toys for players to play with, while others are "quest" items used to create Gift Collections." It gets more complicated than that though. Nothing is ever easy in the game of love, and as in real life, there is the horrifying possibility of rejection. But don't despair, where there's a will there's a way. In the event of rejection "there is a small chance when a player gives a Love Token to an NPC that he or she will be rejected. When this occurs, players will become "Heartbroken" for a certain amount of time. However, players can help their heartbroken friends by giving them a Friendship Bracelet and displaying the 'Power of Friendship.'"

Hah to Boomjack! People ARE going to be saying "Just one more friend and I'll log off." I guess I'm going to have to switch from auto kill mode to auto hugs. It's a little disconcerting.
