  • Yar Radio, the official station for Pirates of the Burning Sea has a series going on now about custom content for the game.

Pirates of the Burning Sea is a unique MMO, in that we allow and encourage players to have their very own custom flags, sail patterns and even ships, incorporated into the game world. Many of our fans have already begun work on their creations, and some have even seen their work through our unique peer review program and accepted into the game as a lasting and permanent game play resource. We’ve been pleased to see the response to our User Content program, but it is important to us that everyone has a chance to participate in this exciting opportunity.

With that said, this is what I want. Give me a Rainbow Monkey swinging three semi lucid squirrels while doing the macarena. I shall stand at the bow of my ship, wind blooowing in my hair, proudly sporting my flag.

  • You Can Walk the Walk...But Can You Talk the Talk?

When it comes to games, Dungeons & Dragons is arguably one of the more jargon-loaded. It's time to demystify some of those terms...at least the ones that apply to Dungeons & Dragons Online (DDO).

“Give me a DC25 UMD check.”

    “Make an opposed grapple check.”

I asked Zed, one of DDO @ Ten Ton Hammer’s resident D&D aficionados, for some examples of D&D jargon. Those were the examples he gave me. My response was a slack-jawed, “Huh?”

I learned that “Give me a DC25 UMD check” is something a dungeon master might say to ask a player to make a Use Magic Device roll versus a Difficulty Class of 25. (I don’t know about you, but I’m still saying, “Huh?”) An “opposed grapple check” is, according to Zed, “A combat option. Essentially a creature/player is attempting to grapple and pin another creature. Opposed checks are made. Each character/creature has a basic grapple score (BAB + Str +Other) and they add that to a d20.”

Yeah, that makes sense. (I think.)

Our handy reference at Ten Ton Hammer's Dungeons & Dragons Online: Stormreach community site will have you talking like a DDO pro!

  • Will unsupervised ankle-biters make it into your MMOG?

Will an Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) rating of "Mature" help keep kids out of Lord of the Rings Online and other MMOGs? And, perhaps more to the point, should it?

I’ve found that gamers come in all varieties, and age has nothing to do with maturity. I’d much rather deal with 10 pre-teen kids who accidentally KS my giant bats in the newbie zone than one 23-year-old griefer who repeatedly trains my group for kicks. I’ve grouped with very young gamers who play with skill and wisdom. Then again, I’ve grouped with 20-something gamers whose antics could’ve easily landed them a spot on MTV’s Jackass.

  • Does a mild winter have you crying in your snow boots?

Get your snow and frost fix from the folks at Ten Ton Hammer's EverQuest II Community Site! Deep in the snowy Norrathian land known as Everfrost, where the giant spiders and the Coca-Cola bears live, lies an enormous dungeon. This zone is home to the mighty dragon Vox and is crawling with angry Ice Giants. Why are they angry? It's freezing in there! You'd be mad too.

As the story goes, the Lady Vox and the Lord Nagafen fell in love and wished to create a child of that love. It was forbidden that they mate, being dragons of opposing elements, and they were then imprisoned away from each other to keep a child from ever being brought to reality. The Lady Vox was imprisoned in the awe-inspiring caves of Permafrost, where she lived out the rest of her days, until her death, brought by one named the "Truthbringer", leaving her spirit behind to forever haunt her frozen kingdom. Her mate, Lord Nagafen was sent to Lavastorm and a good portion of the quests within these zones, brings to light their story.

Savanja will be your tour guide as you experience all that Permafrost has to offer, only at Ten Ton Hammer EverQuest II community site!

  • Wasn't Oni the mean boss punched out in that Johnny Cash song?

Kinda, though that boss (and song) were dubbed "Oney" - that Oney was a jerk, and this Oni kicks ass! This strategy highlight was designed by Oni, a player with extensive experience. He shares with us one of his prefered monk builds along with suggestions for equipment and attributes.

Use Orison of Healing as your primary healing spell, supplimented by Dwayna's Kiss and Healing Seed. Save Heal Other for the times when an ally is losing health quickly, and Heal Party for multiple team mates. Between Mend Ailment and Holy Veil, you can strip any hex or condition.

  • Artsy-fartsy or greed machine?
Ever since Konami videogame designer Hideo Kojima's comment that "a videogame is not art", a debate has quietly roiled among developers and thinking gamers in forum boards across the internet. Most recently Raph Koster, SOE game designer, took Kojima's comment to task in a superb article that (somehow) wove itself into a critique of game reviewers like us! Nonetheless, Ethec has never been one to miss a party, so check out his industry outsider perspective as to whether MMORPG game design is an art or a science.

An art-antagonistic panderer a little closer to home is, sorry Raph, Sony Online Entertainment (SOE). The problem is especially apparent in games SOE-maintained games like Star Wars Galaxies and EverQuest II. This is especially heartbreaking when I realize that no other developer (that I know of) has gone to greater lengths to give it's subscribers what they want. It's the "free bread and circuses" approach employed by many a Caesar, and like the Roman civilization, such a modus operandi has predictable results: lack of substance and eventual ruin.

I'm not suggesting that MMO game design need be elitist to succeed, but game designers must follow their muse. True artists don't pander, they force their audience to experience something worthwhile. Pandering is a stopgap measure precisely because what most MMO gamers want short-term is emphatically not what's good for them in the long run. One needn't look past World of Warcraft to find an MMO that gave gamers what they didn't realize they've longed for all along, yet retained its artistic identity as an action-packed, authentic franchise. Challenge and positive reinforcement pays bigger dividends than raw adrenaline factor, hands-down. Fun over a long timeframe (we're talking years, decades perhaps) is good for the MMO gaming community and for developers alike.
