  • Talking About Beta Hosting at Fileplanet

Yesterday, The Chronicles of Spellborn official site posted a Q & A that talks about their decision to use Fileplanet for their upcoming beta. Keep reading to learn more...

Why did you go with Fileplanet for your upcoming Closed and Open Beta?

Although there are several parties able to host a client and offer it to the masses, we choose for Fileplanet for several reasons. The most important ones being their ability to offer tried and tested processes that go beyond simple hosting and the fact the Fileplanet is part of a large entertainment network. And there is nothing wrong with The Chronicles of Spellborn getting some extra attention.

Read the rest of this Q & A on the official site. Don't forget to head over to the forums here at Ten Ton Hammer and let us know how you feel about MMOs using Fileplanet for Betas.

  • Multi-shard film-makers conference

Posted on the Saga of Ryzom official site lets us know about an unofficial player event. Have some talent with film making? Keep reading for more information...

I would like to invite everyone interested to an Atysian film-makers conference on the Zora Stage, Arispotle Shard on Saturday the 22nd July at 9pm BST (8pm GMT, 4pm EDT, 1pm PDT). This conference is open to everyone from all shards. The main purpose will be to meet other film makers and exchange ideas.
If you don't have an Arispotle character all ready, just make a new Zoraï character on Arispotle and talk to Chiang about coming over to the mainland.

The discussion will include a variety of topics such as:

    * What do you use to make your videos

    * Good resources for free music

    * Exchanging ideas about what sorts of videos we can make

    * How can we support each other in making videos

    * How can we host/promote our videos, so more people from and new to Atys can see them

    * Should we agree on a central site for Atysian videos (say Acridiel's site and/or others).

There are already forum threads about this on the English and German boards, and hopefully someone can translate it into French too. More info about the event is on these threads.

I hope to see you all there!

Head over to the official site to learn more. Remember to keep up to date with the latest news, interviews and information on all your favorite MMOs, including Saga of Ryzom right here at Ten Ton Hammer!

  • To begin a multi-part series, celebrated author Peter S. Beagle's thoughts on his first quest for Tulga's online world

RPG Vault continues their series of peeks at Horizons: Empire of Istaria. This sneak peek features reknown author Peter S. Beagle.

But I've never gone into strange new country in as total a state of ignorance as I did with Horizons. To begin with, I've never even played Pac-Man, Donkey Kong or Super Mario, let alone Mortal Kombat, Tomb Raider or pretty much any computer game known to the mass gaming audience. Indeed, the only one I'd ever played in my life, prior to Horizons, was a PC-based solitaire baseball game employing teams from different eras. I admit to having been vaguely aware of MMORPGs, but the operative word is vaguely. The Horizons creators couldn't have found a greener horn to gaming if they'd advertised.

  • Will Your Favorite Class Endure the Test of Time?

MMORPG.com's Thomas Mortensen has written an editoral that looks at the evolution of playable classes in MMOs. This interesting look at the course of these classes through the past, present and future is well worth the read.

The MMORPG genre has changed a lot since the early days of Meridian 59 and Ultima Online, but the games still relies on the basic classes introduced back then. Most MMORPG still use the Fighter, a heavily armoured close combat character that can take lots of damage. Having to rely on short-range weapons and relative low damage his fights may last long. Thus he will need the healer, whose job is to heal the party and make sure they stay alive. A second role of the healer is to buff the party by adding temporary enchantments, which make the party stronger, faster or more resilient. The mage is the most fragile character, but he can deliver large amounts of ranged damage through arcane magic. Though the games do not always use the same names for the character classes they are always build on one of these arch classes or a mix of two of them through hybrids like the Bard, Paladin or Battlemage.

This mix is tried and proven in MMORPGs through the past ten years. The fighter takes the damage, the healer keeps him alive and the mage deals the damage. But will these three classes keep being the blood of MMORPGs in the years ahead?
