  • MOPGL has an interview with Flying Lab's Taylor 'Augustus' Daynes. This lead designer shares info on their upcoming game Pirates of the Burning Sea.

Since ships will be single-player operated, I'm wondering how smart the NPCs are. Will there be any NPC controlled ships?pirates of the burning sea

In addition to a world full of NPC enemies, many of the missions in our game involve NPC allies. One thing we’ve learned from other games, it’s that if you are going to have NPC allies, they’d better be worth something. NPCs that just wander off and get killed, or worse, wander off and get you killed are a recipe for frustration. So we firmly believe that NPCs need to be competent. This is a tricky problem for us though, because unlike other MMOs, where NPCs can pretty much just run straight up to you and auto-attack, our NPCs need to know how to use the wind, how to present their broadside to you in order to attack, and how to stay out of your firing arcs. Brady “Jigmasta” Houck – our AI guru – has worked on our AI over the last year, and I’m happy to report that our NPCs are very smart. Surprisingly smart. They often startle me with actions or tactics that we didn’t program into them. For instance, one NPC in a fast ship planted himself right in front of me, waited for me to come to a stop after colliding with it, and then it boarded me now that I was an easy grappling target. Stuff like that makes your day!

  • China enters low-security space

Scrappy space-sim MMO EVE Online is China bound, according to IcelandReview. If there was ever a community- and PvP-intensive game made for the Asian bloc, this is it.

I was reading along, and all was well and good. That is, until I got to this DOWNRIGHT SCARY part....

According to Hilmar, it is possible that the game will be used for instruction in Chinese schools.

Doesn't China have the world's largest air force? Um, maybe this isn't such a good idea, CCP. Is that the Imperial Death March and clomping boots I hear?

Anyway, check out the latest news from EVE Online and CCP at IcelandReview while I make sure my battleship has plenty of ammo.

  • There are a few updates in the works. The first one doesn't come as a surprise. Everyone has mail in game now. Frankly, I can't live without it.

The Couriers of House Orien, masters of transport and delivery, have begun a new effort to make inroads into the wealth held by Xen'drik and Stormreach. To that end, they have placed enchanted delivery devices throughout the city to allow citizens, for a small fee, to transport items quickly over short distances.

These devices will be found in the city wards of Stormreach when the Twilight Forge Module is released. A representative of House Orien will also be available in the city to talk to and answer the questions of those interested.

    Features:

    Send Text Messages

You can write messages to your friends or other characters on your account and they will be delivered the next time they come online.

    Send Items

When sending a message, you can attach an item from your inventory to it. The item will be removed from your inventory and wait for the recipient to retrieve it.

    Send Currency

When sending a message, you can enter an amount of currency that you would like to send.

    Receiving Mail

You can send and retrieve mail through mailboxes, which are placed across Stormreach in the different City Wards. When you receive a message, you will see a letter icon on your focus orb. Once a message is opened, it will be deleted after three days.

    Dead Letter Office

If a person on your ignore list attempts to send you a message, it will be returned to the sender. Unopened letters will be returned to the sender after 30 days. If you receive a message that was returned to you, you must open it within 30 days or it will be deleted.

The services of the House Orien Couriers will provide a complete system for communication and commerce with other residents of Stormreach. It’s never been easier to do business and keep in touch!

Next on our tour of what's up in DDO, is the weekly development activity. There's a long laundry list so you'll have to go to the Official Site. to see it. However, here's a taste.

Check out the latest updates to the "Weekly Development Activities." The goal for this feature is to give solid expectations on what you can expect to see in future updates.

    In QA
These items are in QA and should be a part of the next update.

    Vendors and NPC's

    * The Jewelry and Clothing Pawnbrokers will be moving to the Marketplace Tent. Vendors selling non-magical consumable goods will take their place in the House shops.
    * We will be correcting some of the (now) incorrect NPC dialogue following the recent relocation of several quest NPCs.
    * NEW - Scrag the kobold will be fixed so that he can talk to more than one player at a time.

    Items

    * The variety of Bane/Greater Bane/Slaying arrows and bolts will be significantly increased. Additionally, we will be adding Bane and Greater Bane missiles to the loot tables for chests.
    * Warforged Oil (Drink) will be significantly improved so that it is comparable in effectiveness to similar to non-oil drinks of equivalent cost.
    * The Brooch of Waterbreathing will once again have a 90 second effect.
    * Players will no longer find Slaying arrows that don't have killable monsters associated with them.
    * Hold Person scrolls will now be available for sale with the rest of the level 3 Arcane Scrolls.
    * We are changing the description of some resistance items to help clarify stacking. For example "of resistance" items do not stack with items that give a bonus to a specific category of saves (i.e. will saves).
    * There is the possibility that some items have been created that cast Fireshield. Fireshield has not been fully implemented into the game and does not return damage to enemies that attack a fireshielded character. These items will no longer be created, but Fireshield items already in existence will not be changed. Fireshield does Reduce damage from fire while it is in effect.
    * Holy, Axiomatic, and Anarchic weapons no longer display the Immune message when a player of the correct alignment equips them.
    * The Brooch of Shielding and Raktu’s Trifle will no longer display an alert icon for their Magic missile shielding effects.
    * Any new Docents of Filtration will be properly identified as docents.
    * Any new Thanatos Weave Robes will be properly identified as robes.

  • The E3 Coverage continues with this Lord of the Rings Online Preview at Gamers Info.

he Lord of the Rings Online allows players to create characters from four of the Living Races: humans, elves, hobbits and dwarves. There's no option to play as a member of Sauron's forces: instead, the focus is placed on the game's narrative, which explores some of the struggles experienced by the Living Races at the end of the Third Age. Stepping on the heels of the Fellowship of the Ring isn't the aim here: instead, the game hopes to explore events in the rest of the world, whilst the Fellowship quest onwards towards Mount Doom.

  • Here is yet another... WoW Burning Crusade Preview. This one comes from Gaming Excellence.

So what is offered to devoted players in The Burning Crusade? First and foremost on anyone's list would be the hundreds of hours of new gameplay in a completely new area for high-level characters. This begins with the opening of the Dark Portal from Azeroth to Outland, which will be similar to a world-event, but will not require that all players be in the same area to experience it. Although the details were sketchy at this point, Blizzard has stated that regardless of where you may happen to be on the world map when this occurs on your server, and regardless of your level, you will experience something akin to hell freezing over. Or the gates to hell opening up and unleashing monsters like you have never seen before. Or the announcement of Starcraft 2 followed by a server crash. Okay, so the last one was a stretch, but I assure you that whatever does happen, you will want to be online for it, even if your character is still only level 25 or so.
