  • The updates are few and far between. However, I've started rooting for this little caboose that could. It's not easy putting together an independant MMO of these proportions. They're struggling yes, but they've got a good idea and the will to see it through. Let's hear it for the underdogs!

server technology ... This is what has been going on lately... the World Fusion server technology (which Atriarch utilizes) is going through a series of overhauls to prepare it to eventually be capable of expanding to the expectations that gamers have of the current crop of games. In the process of doing this, Arc brought down the servers running the previous version of our technology... hence, the testing servers were no longer available. As of today, he was not able to give me an ETA on the new servers. Even if he did, I'm sure my disease would flare up again, and we want to avoid that ;-)

  • You read our GDC Coverage of The Battlestar Keynote from Ron Moore. The man likes to re-invent the IP. Well he's discussing a possible new game. Interesting enough, he has this to say.

Moore says no one has come up with the great TV/video game hybrid yet, the game that everyone in the U.S. has to play. As a result, there's the opportunity to be a pioneer in this space.

"I've thought about doing something where you start a property across mediums, with Internet participation and role-playing video games," he says. "Not every show or property will lend itself to that type of hybrid environment, but if you set it up from the get-go to design it that way, I think that's a really rich and interesting place for the business to go."

Not to be contrary, but tv/ video game hybrid. Stargate Worlds anyone? There's no word on whether it will be a MMO or just a casual experience over the net / ipod mobile platform. However, it's interesting news indeed. Is Sci Fi going MMO?

  • "FAE ARE COMING WINTER 2006"

This cryptic message, along with "The Future of EverQuest II" spelled out in the game's "woodelf" font, was hidden in a sticker handed out at last week's SOE FanFaire 2006. (If you want details on how to break the code, click here) We received the sticker image (right - click it!) in a press release from SOE tonight that hinted at the "double coded message". The sticker seems to hint that a new retail expansion for EverQuest 2 will hit stores this holiday season.

Beyond that, according to Wiki, "fae" is simply an abbreviation of "faerie" - and what SOE means by that is anyone's guess. Old timers like me might remember a certain zone whose name contained something like "fae" (and that might just tie into the sticker's use of the "woodelf" font). But we're just speculating.

  • Gods & Heroes: From Mortality to Perpetual-ity

Perpetual and SOE are collaborating on the once near-defunct MMO Gods and Heroes: Rome Rising, and that sound you hear? It's the games fairly sizable fanbase rejoicing. GameZone speaks with Perpetual's design director Stieg Hedlund to update us on the game's progress:

Q: As this is based on the Roman era, how authentic to the time frame is the game? Will family have much to do with status within the society?

Stieg: Well our game is a blend of history and mythology, so discussing it terms of authenticity is a bit odd. However, we do enjoy the flavor and detail provided by this backdrop a great deal, and the characters, environments and stories of the game are deeply infused with this material. We’ve really done a great deal of research in both history and myth, but our focus has always been on presenting what we’ve learned in a way that entertains. Certainly people could learn a thing or two about Roman culture from our game, but they’re guaranteed to have fun doing so.

  • Will Mac gamers have to go to BootCamp?

With the advent of BootCamp and the intel Mac, Mac users can play games designed for Windows XP. Blizzard, who released Windows and Mac versions of World of Warcraft in the same box, welcomes the technology, but says the company will continue to develop for native Mac users.

Blizzard says in its General FAQ and its Technology FAQ specifically for World of Warcraft that an Intel Mac equipped with Boot Camp and Windows XP is indeed capable of working with World of Warcraft’s Windows version, but cautions that Boot Camp is beta software, and said that it won’t offer technical support for the software.

As to Blizzard’s future on the Mac platform, the company added, “We have a recognized track record of native Mac OS support, and we have no plans to break with that tradition. We understand that our Mac player base prefers native software whenever possible, and our cross-platform development practice addresses that.”

  • FiringSquad.com has a new interview with the Bioware team on their upcoming MMO Project. Anyone else frightfully excited? They make good games.. I'm curious to see what game they have to show us.

FiringSquad: Why did BioWare want to launch an MMORPG and establish a base in Austin Texas to handle the development?

Ray Muzyka: BioWare has been considering developing an MMORPG for quite some time – we’ve always felt that developing an MMORPG would be a natural extension of BioWare’s past experiences in developing roleplaying games. Austin has a tremendous gaming heritage with a lot of talent, especially in the MMO space. Austin offers a very friendly environment to game and technology development, with lots of experienced, talented, passionate individuals – and we’ve got a great team at BioWare Austin already as a result! We’re very excited to take the best feature of the MMO space and combine them with the RPG experience we have at BioWare.

Be sure the read the interview. It has some really interesting info on what they have in the pipeline.

  • Pikachu meets vehicle-launched tactical nukes.

If you listened to our second podcast, you learned that playing cards is a fun way to pass the time between fights in your favorite old-school MMO (/cough). However, this is probably not what the makers of Auto Assault had in mind when they pasted their storyboard assets to virtual cover stock and created a digitized (drumroll please) Auto Assault Trading Card Game.

The real news: public testing of the game has begun, and you're invited.

Worlds Apart Productions announced the availability of public testing for the Auto Assault™ Trading Card Game (TCG), the digital trading-card game based on Auto Assault® the fastest, most destructive MMO ever, published by NCsoft and developed by NetDevil.

Check out the Auto Assault TCG infobit at Gaming-Age. And, hey, maybe the TCG site hasn't been blocked by your office computer firewall yet!

And, oh, did we mention that Auto Assault the MMO comes out this Thursday, April 13th? Spectacular. Check out our Auto Assault @ TenTonHammer community site for all your destructive needs, or visit the Auto Assault official site.

The legend, which forms the back-story to ArchLord, tells of an ancient time when two mighty heroes from different races jointly held the Archons, using their power to unite the races. Now, one hundred years later, the legend of the two heroes has faded and the Archons are there to be claimed – if they can be found…
