  • A profession? My profession is weak bylines!

Guild Wars' official site is sporting a new page dedicated to explaining each of the game's six professions. But who has time for that when there's deskpaper (and yes, we at TTH want to change your hearts and minds about what's been previously dubbed "wallpaper" - does it go on your wall? Nope.), sweet sweet Guild Wars Deskpape, to be downloaded?

Wallpaper of the Week 31 August 2005

This Wednesday's desktop presents an early concept for a Guild Hall design, dating from summer of 2004. You'll find your choice of wallpaper sizes and aspect ratios in the Gallery, or on this direct link.

Professions Section Updated 31 August 2005

We've taken another pass at the Professions Section and now display the names and descriptions of each skill and the related skill icon, as well. Find this expanded content on this page.

Have a look at the Guild Wars professions, or have a sample from the Guild Wars Deskpaper tray. Go on!

  • Want to show off your "alter ego"?

A writer / photographer team will be travelling the US seeking MMOG players that make their virtual world their handle on reality, especially those who have found their "significant other" online. I did... too bad she's an NPC. Ours is a forbidden love; bah, she was getting a little predictable anyway.

Writer Tracy Spaight and photographer Robbie Cooper will be interviewing and photographing MMO players for the Alter Ego Exhibition and book in the coming weeks. Alter Ego takes viewers on a journey into the frontiers of cyberspace to explore community, identity, love, and loss within virtual worlds. Alter Ego will:

    · Document the growing culture of video games and online worlds in an intelligent, witty, and accessible way
    · Explore how gamers use technology to create novel forms of community and identity in cyberspace
    · Provide a visually arresting and entertaining journalistic record of life on the cyber frontier

Alter Ego juxtaposes photographs of real people with their avatars and documents life on the screen with player stories, interviews, and screen grabs. The exhibition opens in Amsterdam this November and will visit other cities across Europe, the U.S., and the Far East beginning next year. The book will be published sometime next summer. You can read about the original exhibit at http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/3683260.stm

Robbie and Tracy are looking for players who:

    - Look like their avatars
    - Play a different gender than their real world gender
    - Met their significant other online
    - Have a colorful, off-the-wall, or unusual story about their online experiences

The authors have not finalized their itinerary, but plan to begin their trip in South Carolina on September 10th and work their way up the East coast. From there they'll travel to selected cities in the Mid-West before heading out to California. If you'd like to be a part of the project, please send an email to Tracy at tspaight@gmail.com. Tell where you live, how to contact you, and why you would make a good interview subject for the book / exhibit.

Alter Ego is an independent project that is not sponsored, approved, or endorsed by NCsoft Corporation, NC Interactive, Inc., Cryptic Studios, Inc., NetDevil Ltd, or ArenaNet Inc. This notice is presented as a courtesy to members of our community who may wish to voluntarily participate. Please direct all inquiries about Alter Ego to the creators at tspaight@gmail.com.

  • Gilbert and Sullivan have nothing on these pirates

Flying Labs developers carried some of the questions about the end-of-year maritime MMOG "Pirates of the Burning Sea" home with them from PAX, and posted a Q&A thread along with new screens:

And now that people are coming back from PAX and writing about their experiences, there are lots of great questions and comments showing up on our forums that we wanted to take a moment to address. Most of these were questions, but there were a couple misunderstandings we wanted to clear up as well.

Get your very own PotBS Q&A, and your new PotBS screenshots too.

  • In the beginning, there was Atys...

Nevrax Entertainment takes things (literally) back to the beginning with their "World Tour" of the out-now Fantasy MMOG "Saga of Ryzom."

Across the universe, past vast galaxies, there was a great fusion of matter, and a unique world came into being. The primeval roots were soon sprouting green tendrils into the sky, fowl were soaring on the wing, and beasts romping in the frenetic miracle of Life.

There lives on this planet, called Atys, humanoids, called homins. There are four homin races: Matis, Tryker, Fyros and Zoraï. To this day, nobody has managed to shed light on the mystery surrounding their arrival. A legend nonetheless has been passed on through the ages, and this legend is the key to discovering the secret behind the origins of Atys.

More storyline and screenshots than shake your Saga at in the Ryzom "World Tour" at MMORPG.com!

  • DDO's newest subclass: Powerpuff Girls! Thanks Maya!

A DDO.com forum member showed concern regarding the presence of content to appeal to girls. The full forum thread is a bit of a trainwreck filled with criticism, but I'm sure at least some people out there will find the dev response amusing. Check out the full thread here.

    Original Poster, Oceaniceyes:

Ok, I am totally new to the forums here. I have never played DnD before, but am hoping for a fun game. However, one of the things that got me into playing games was the ability to make things pretty. (I know, its very girlie) I liked crafting, decorating and wearing pretty clothes. I am concerned that there is no girl content planned for this game. If I am just not finding the info, please enlighten me.

    Dev Responder, hsinclair:

We have great girly content, such as +5 Adamantine Greatswords, Beholders, Blade Traps, and Fireballs, just to name a few.

  • Who needs Korea when EQ2 has "Combat Changes"?!
The infamous "Combat Changes" loom on the EQ2 horizon, making a number of folks restless. This week's pseudo-therpeutic, semi-humorous, 100% fun column walks one quavering Warden through the early stages of acceptance and previews some of the changes too! Then the article quickly quickly gets out of hand as yours truly discusses my proposed "Combat Changes!" Check it out!

"Of course, the Star Wars Galaxies veterans (well, at least the ones that left the game to play EQ2) started having sweaty flashbacks when they heard that SOE was out to redo the pummeling procedure in their newfound home. As things in EQ2 are in no way as bad as SWG was in the pre-CU days (where botting was the new ganking, and you and your friends could eat the nastiest PvE mobs alive with ease with the right combination of armor, weaponry, and buffs), we'll likely not see what many considered a total over-reaction that threw the entertainers out with the bathwater. And let's spend a moment in eulogy of the Hutt dancers, cantina musicians, and other ways the SWG revamp chagrined its pure artisans. SWG sought to be as novel as the 70s cultural phenomenon that spawned it, and SWG's "Combat Changes" in many ways returned the game to its MMOG roots at the expense of entertainer as an viable and attractive subclass offering. EQ2 is pretty down-home-comfort in its RPG approach. So in EQ2 née SWG, there were fewer points of contact for play imbalances and player malignment in the first place."

  • A Treasure Chest! Or, maybe just an update. You decide.
Sony Online Entertainment has posted the latest EverQuest 2 Treasure Chest. At the mention of a treasure chest the TTH offices became infested with pirates. Ninjas were called in to remove the infestation, but all we could get out of them was this:

"Sometimes it's hard to find the buried treasures contained within the EverQuest II forums. The Treasure Chest highlights useful, insightful, or entertaining posts that you may want to check out. Get your treasure maps and shovels ready--we're about to discover a Treasure Chest!

  • Reading the forums, so you don't have to.
The good folks at Nevrax have put together another Saga of Ryzom forum watch, which is basically a compilation of the best threads. While compiling a list of best quotes by Kevin Pereira on Attack of the Show we found that there weren't any. We reserve the right to substitution and in place of the list we give you this:

"We decided to gather here the posts made by the Ryzom team on the
boards: from now on, and periodically, I will write a news compiling
these posts. It will allow you to know what is said on the boards while
saving you the trouble of having to browse many threads. ;) This way,
you will also be able to know what is told on the forums of the other
    communities. "
