You never get a second chance to make a first impression goes an old saying, and rarely is it proved wrong. Dungeons and Dragons Online has done just that however with the switch in revenue model away from subscriptions to a free-to-play with microtrasnaction platform. Not content to simply rest on its newfound success, the team at Turbine is cranking out adventure packs to satisfy the newly resurgent player base. One of the newest to enter the fray is Gianthold, a pack intended for players in the level 13-14 range that features ten adventures, fourty-five quests and a raid.

Mabinogi, a second generation free-to-play from Nexion, has just released a new item to its players and its just in time for the Halloween season. The Magic Broom is the perfect holiday accessory, it comes in the Oak and Straw varieties with Oak being the slightly faster of the two, this broom also doubles as a...well... a broom! It can be used to sweep areas to uncover hidden items as you traverse the lands. You can see all the new items and get more info on the game here, and be sure to check out the video here.

What could cataclysm bring about for guild talents
    Clipboard02.jpg

The WoW Economist is back, if you already didn't know, and has a few top notch articles already out there. The latest one, about Guild Economics in Cataclysm, has a really good line about what if there were guild retention bonuses. What if you or the guild got a bonus for having people stay in the guild? Would it help turnover rates? Pretty thought provoking and exactly why it's an excellent read.

Retention Bonus: For every guild member you retain for more than 1 year (or for X% of Guild Member Retained), the Guild shall XXXXXXXX. The end is blank – too many possibilities (1/pt). I originally wrote that the Guild shall be awarded X gold, I mean wy not?. Then I thought why not it be Improved Penny Pincher above to say 25 -50%. Then I thought wait, what else could it be? I think some sort of bonus for retention should be awarded but maybe not just limited to economic rewards. I like the idea there is a carrot out there for Guild Management to run a Guild with high retention figures.

The WoW Economist has a good article up today. You should go give it a read.

Aether extraction captcha and broker search options round out an interesting list
Aion - Visions in the Abyss 1
With the already bursting patch notes list for Aion patch 1.5.1, NCsoft has added to the preliminary list with even more fixes and updates. While the new additions are primarily minor changes there are some interesting alterations that caught my eye including aether extraction captcha and helpful keyword searches on the broker.

    1. When you extract Aether, there’s a chance that Aether Poison Gas will infiltrate your body. The poison blocks gathering for a certain period of time unless you detoxify the poison.

    - Once you are poisoned the only way to detoxify yourself is to utter the "Cleansing Word.”

    - To utter the Cleansing Word, type the randomly given letters and numbers within the designated time

    - When you utter the Word, you get three chances to enter the correct letter/number sequence. If you fail three times, Vitality Extracting and Aether Extracting are prohibited.

    - The “/ExtractStatus” command provides your extraction status.

    - When you have Aether Poison Gas in your body, you can still move and activate other abilities, so move to a safe place before you utter the Cleansing Word.

You can get the full and newly updated patch notes here or just catch the latest additions by following this link.

Still topping sales charts a month after release
    Aion - Anturoon Coast
After topping digital download charts for pre-orders and continuing to dominate after release, Aion is finally dropping to the bottom of the top 10 a month after release. Direct2Drive and Steam have released their top 10 lists for the week of October 25-31 which very well could be the last week the game shows up on these charts at all.

    Direct2Drive:

    1. Borderlands
    2. Dragon Age: Origins Digital Deluxe Edition (Preorder)
    3. Dragon Age: Origins Digital Deluxe Ed. w/ Prima Guide(Preorder)
    4. Torchlight
    5. Tropico 3
    6. Dragon Age: Origins (Preorder)
    7. Civilization 4: The Complete Edition
    8. Aion
    9. Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines (Halloween Promo)
    10. Risen

    Steam:

    1. Borderlands LW: 1
    2. Left 4 Dead 2 (Pre-Order) LW: 2
    3. Torchlight LW: Not Listed
    4. Football Manager 2010 LW: Not Listed
    4. Dragon Age Origins: Digital Deluxe Edition (Pre-Order) LW: 3
    5. Killing Floor LW: 10
    6. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Pre-Order) LW: 5
    7. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (Sale) LW: Not Listed
    8. Dragon Age Origins LW: 4 (Pre-Order)
    9. S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl (Sale) LW: Not Listed
    10. Team Fortress 2 (Sale) LW: Not Listed
    10. Aion: Standard Edition LW: 7

Aion certainly had a good run on sales charts and as routine sets in for gamers who have decided to stick around after the first free month, sales will start to find their comfortable groove for the time being.

So now that the initial mad dash has subsided, did Aion find a solid playerbase? It is still pretty populated on my servers, let us know how it's looking from where you play by clicking the "Post your comments" link below.

The Heart of Mirkwood -
A Siege of Mirkwood Q&A with Jeffrey Steefel

At Ten Ton Hammer, our viewers vote with what they read, and one of the hottest topics this month is LotRO's December expansion, Siege of Mirkwood. We've been spending a lot of time with LotRO Executive Producer, Jeffrey Steefel lately, trying to uncover all there is to know about this important epilogue to Volume 2. Mr. Steefel has revealed, we dare say, just about as much as there is to be known about the expansion at this point.

We bring those conversations to our readers in a huge all-encompassing Lord of the Rings Online: Siege of Mirkwood Q&A.

From the article:

“The [Skirmish] tracking system... is pretty in depth – it’s tracking pretty much everything that you do. How many kills you have, how many of the particular instances you’ve defeated, how many lieutenants you’ve defeated or even what party size you were in and what the difficulty level was. They system puts all of that together in a huge leaderboard that lets you see how your stats compare to other people who have tried a particular instance at a particular level, or how do your personal stats add up in terms of the number of overall kills you’ve had.”

Covered here are more details about the Skirmish System, General Improvements, and the inside scoop on new Legendary Items and their Upgrade Scrolls, Adventure Packs, Subscription Models, and so much more.

    Loading_Logo.jpg

Once upon a time in the magical land of MMOGs, in-game anniversary celebrations set the bar for what would become one of the staples of the industry in the years to follow. Much of the more recent flood of holiday themed events came into being thanks in large part to how developers formerly opted to commemorate milestones in the overall lifecycle of their creations. With two such major milestones just around the corner, we take a look at how one of these events stacks up to the celebrations of yesteryear today in Loading… Fabled or Forgotten?

Raids, dungeons, instances, whatever you want to call 'em we've got the guide to do them.
    anubintoc.jpg

Our Instance guide portal for World of Warcraft has all of the info you need to know about instances in one place. We've got a large list of available guides to help you through the various instances and raids along with a guide on just what instances are, how to prepare, and more. So don't struggle to work your way through the instances when we've got all of the instance guides you need to get to the next level.

There are two types of instances in WoW. Group instances (collectively called 5-man instances) and raids. A 5-man instance is called a 5-man instance for a simple reason: they only allow 5 people inside. Those 5 people are given their own dungeon to fight in and no one else is allowed in. The groups generally consist of a tank (someone to take damage), a healer (someone to heal the damage taken), and three damage dealers (to deal damage to the enemies) in order to defeat the enemies and bosses inside.

Our instance guides can help you get to the next level!

    Will you choose sides?
    Aion-Resting
While most of the Aion playerbase stays quietly tucked away in their blanket of innocence, and epic battle grows between the two sides of the vocal minority as we watch it play out on gaming forums across the web. Agree or disagree with the vocal, it is hard to turn a blind eye to the bickering.

Amongst the general chatter that you'll find on any gaming forum, you'll also see the phenomenon that I speak of. A cloister of players whose sole mission is to defend their beloved game, and those who are hell bent on damning it. Not unlike the epic struggle of good versus evil, the fanboi versus the hater never truly dies and tends to crop up after every game release and continues to feed and thrive on public attention long after the game is dead.
