Redefining How We Make MMOGs: An Interview with the President of 38 Studios

Posted September 13th, 2007 by Aelryn

Brett Close: President, gamer, raconteur extraordinaire.

Few studios in the MMOG industry have as much "star power" as 38 Studios. With a development team chock full of veterans and new MMOG developers alike, the studio is vying to make a world that has more story and dynamicity than any other game currently on the market. At AGDC '07, Cody "Micajah" Bye, Ten Ton Hammer's managing editor, sat down with the president of 38 Studios, Brett Close, to hear his thoughts on the studio and where he believes the future of the MMOG industry is headed.

"The next frontier [for MMOGs], to me, is a lot like what happened with 3D shooters," Brett explained. "You had these basic 3D shooters and somebody realized that this isn't just a game; it's a storytelling device and medium. Then you had companies like Valve making Half-Life and Half-Life 2, and Midway making the Medal of Honor games. It's all about storytelling."
