Avast Ye Swabbies!

Thar be a New MMO!

by Tony “Radar” Jones

I can admit up front, I love all things pirate. I watched Errol Flynn movies as a child, and played Sid Meier’s Pirates! more hours than I can remember. I was genuinely excited about seeing this game because well, duh, it’s a pirate game! I grabbed my rapier, two flintlock pistols and pushed my way past those scurvy security guards to get a look at Disney’s new pirate MMO “Pirates of the Caribbean.”

The graphics were the first thing that caught my eye. They went with a more cartoon-like feel than something of a serious MMO. That’s not to say it didn’t look well designed, just don’t expect a realistic looking Johnny Depp dancing around acting crazy. The colors were vibrant, well rendered, but I did see a little lag, which could easily be explained by the unreliable network connections we have here in the Convention Center.

One of the developers was kind enough to show me a few features, although he measured my height to make sure I was tall enough to play. The target audience they are looking for on this game is age 10 and up, so it explains the cartoonish graphics. He started out in a Caribbean-looking town, which was fairly well-drawn, and seemed to provide some challenge in running around.
