A little holiday kitsch has been a staple of MMO gaming since Ultima Online's golden days. Ethec takes a look at how devs are decking the halls during the 2005 holiday season, and discusses why sometimes impractical "fluff" content is good for the gaming community.

"Even the sci-fi MMOGs got in on the holiday fun. Star Wars hosted a number of holiday-related live events, including a Cantina party and a roleplaying celebration of the Wookie "Lifeday" holiday (including a gift-exchange). Anarchy Online acts out a popular holiday song with 12 presents given at the end of a dozen holiday "safaris" (the idea of a safari may not mesh with the wintry scenery on Currier & Ives tins, but hey, it's all good fun). Last but not least, EVE Online gave its community a Christmas present in the form of the "Red Moon Rising" expansion."
