“Alright, soldier! I see you dragging around out there on the battlefield! It’s time for you to take a break. Since the Brann drink all of our alcohol and carousing in Graviton armor is just plain dangerous, we need to find a way for you to blow off some steam. I’ve got the perfect place for you – Turpis Refinery. No, I didn’t say ‘distillery,’ I said ‘refinery.’ Maybe those Penumbra folks can smuggle some hooch for you later, but right now I need you to pay attention. Now listen, the Bane have some type of poison factory down in the southern region of Pools, so hustle your butt down there and… are you still thinking about carousing in Graviton armor?? I’m telling you that’s just not a good idea. You see this scar? Well… never mind, forget about that right now. I need you in the south of Pools on the double! While you are down there maybe you can blow up some stuff and get your head back in this war. I even hear that there might be one of those logos things down there that you receptive types collect. Ah, so that got your attention, did it? Good! Now move out!”
I Don't Want To Go In.
Turpis Refinery is an instance in the south of Pools with level 34-36 Bane. If you haven’t run any missions in Pools, this is an easy first mission/instance. Start in the Snakepit (the western-most AFS base in Pools) and see Spymaster Timlin for the “Looking for Logos” mission. Timlin will direct you to see Scientist Suresh (a Sanskrit word which means “ruler of gods” and also a character name from the TV show “Heroes”) who is stationed in the South Listening Post. If you haven’t been to the waypoint in the South Listening Post, you’ll have a little bit of a run ahead of you. Just stick to the lower edge of the map as best you can. You’ll want to avoid the giant howler Cainynix and a small Bane forward operating base. The tricky part is finding the entrance leading to the underground South Listening Post (it’s at 283, -584).
Scientist Suresh will change the “Looking for Logos” objective into finding the logos Far and returning to her. Head up a short ramp and talk to Corporal Hash. After a ride on the Turpis Transport, you’ll see four mission icons for you to gather. Spymaster Terentyava wants you to collect some hard drives via the “Hard Core” mission. Biotech Johansson wants you to delay Bane production by blowing up everything you see in the “Cost of Doing Business” mission. Commander Lindloff wants you to find the Poison Master in “The Bad Doctor” mission. Inside the tent with the medic, Field Chemist Larouche wants you to bring back some chemical samples in the “Chemistry 101” mission.
Note: There is no medic in the South Listening Post even though you can rez there. However, now that you can take the dropship from the post to Turpis, you can visit the medic in the Turpis Refinery instance for repair, supplies and selling unwanted gear.
Take the path up the hill to the entrance of the cave and talk to Demolitionist Niebolo. He will give you the “Things That Blow Up” mission where you need to plant several bombs. The first bomb will blow a hole in the wall separating the cave from the facility.
The facility is laid out like a horseshoe with two chemical pools: one on each side. In the middle of the horseshoe are some barracks, and at the top of the horseshoe is the experimentation area and holding cells. There are no vertical levels in which to get lost. It is a fairly compact map, so there is not much open running. There are several laser gates, but they all automatically open for you. Snipers and those carrying rocket launchers should plan on most of the combat being in close quarters. Specialists with tools are a welcome addition to any squad, and they will do well in this instance.
Are They Hatching This Logos?
We recommend not falling or jumping into the chemical pools as there did not appear to be a way out of those. As a result, be careful when running on the walkways over the pools and typing at the same time. We tried our best to knock some Bane into the pool, but the game wouldn’t let us. J
In the Chemical Research areas, take time to notice the experiments going on in there. Those experiments make a trip to the dentist seem like a walk in the park by comparison.
Now about the “blow up stuff” part…. As you go through shooting lab tables, security CPUs, storage tanks, hoses, storage lockers, etc., you will notice a message “Hours to Reconstruct ##/72” appear. This is the result of the “Cost of Doing Business” mission. Your goal is to blow up enough stuff to give the Bane facility seventy-two hours of downtime. [Tip: In the Chemical Research room, you can fiddle with a panel of switches to unlock the holding cells. There are two holding cells in particular that have canisters to destroy.] There are also bombs to plant according to the mission markers as part of the “Things That Blow Up” mission.
In the midst of blasting everything in sight and planting bombs on the rest, there are three hard drives to recover at the mission marker points of: -247, -64 (charlie); -20, 175 (alpha); and 64, -96 (bravo). [We know that’s out of order, but that’s the order they appear in the instance.] In a two-soldier squad we ran, the non-looter did not get credit for looting the hard drives. Fortunately, the hard drives respawned, and the second player was able to grab them for credit. Also of note, the hard drives don’t stack in your backpack. You will need three free slots on the Mission tab of your backpack for the hard drives plus the one already occupied by the bombs.
“The Bad Doctor” mission can be completed by killing the level 36 Thrax engineer named “The Toxicologist” at 133, -25. We guess he didn’t know the AFS nicknamed him the “Poison Doctor”. Maybe he’s like the Jackal and goes by numerous nefarious names.
The cave leading to the logos Far is at the end of the horseshoe hallway, opposite from where you entered the facility. The mission map makes it look like the facility has a wall there, but it is actually a door that will open as you approach the door. The coordinates for the logos are 40, -223. You will need this logos for the Trinity Bridge instance in Plateau.
After you have laid waste to everything possible, head out and collect your rewards. Be certain you have turned in instance missions before you leave the instance or you will fail the ones you forgot to turn in. The five to missions to turn in before you leave are: Things That Blow Up, Cost of Doing Business, The Bad Doctor, Hard Core, and Chemistry 101. You can talk to Commander Splain near the computer terminal for instructions on how to summon the dropship to return to the South Listening Post. You’ll want to show Suresh the logos to complete the “Looking for Logos” mission. Take the waypoint in the South Listening Post to your next destination. Keep this instance in mind when you get to Marshes as the story relates to what the Bane are doing in that zone.
