For those of you who have not checked out the information on the Blizzard Forums; the University of Illinois is running a survey using small WoW guilds that do not use any form of voice communication.

The study is quite interesting in nature (even though the specifics are not detailed). I would suggest taking a look at the site created for the study: HERE

Also check out the official post on the Blizzard Boards about this: HERE

Here's a quick snippet from the study's site:

What is the study about?

It's an opinion survey. We are interested in the opinions of gamers, and have decided to use entire guilds from within Blizzard's World of Warcraft MMRPG.

What will I need to do?

Two things:

1) You will be asked to complete three short surveys over the course of a month. Each will take about 20-25 minutes.

2) Some of the guilds will be selected at random to receive free headset microphones and free access to voice software and servers that will enable you to talk with your guildmates (rather than just type). We will mail you the hardware and give you instructions, passwords and access to the voice servers. If your group is chosen, we will ask that you try out the system for one month, playing no more or less that you would have already. If your group isn't chosen, you just do the surveys.

What do I get for participating?

If you complete all three short surveys, we will mail you $20. If all of your guildmates complete the survey, we will increase this to $40. Everyone, whether they get the headset mics or not, will be paid for participating.
