New TenTonHammer Book Review

Posted Thu, Mar 02, 2006 by Ethec

Smart Bomb - A book about videogaming that doesn't, well, bomb.

TenTonHammer's own Michael Sun gives his views on a book that explores the history of videogaming, online and offline. Smart Bomb surveys the industry's growth from an idle hobby in the late 1950s to the multi-billion dollar industry that it is today.

Indeed even William Higinbotham, a scientist credited with being part of a team that developed radar, and who worked under J. Robert Oppenheimer at the Manhattan Project, might have some doubts that the electronic game he devised would be one that people would line up to play. Using an analog computer, an oscilloscope and other electronics equipment, Higinbotham invented a game that he called "Table Tennis For Two." Although he himself professed no interest in the gaming industry whatsoever, Higinbotham is widely known today as the "Grandfather of the Videogame."
