Patchwerk (Abomination)

Introduction

Patchwerk is the first boss in the Abomination Wing. He’s, as you can probably guess by now, a very large and mean Abomination. Unlike the other three bosses that stand guard as the first defenses for their wing, Patchwerk is absolutely no joke. He’s got an extremely simple encounter that only requires very few tactics, but he’s got a slight trick up his sleeve. He must die within seven minutes or your raid is done for. Seven minutes is nowhere near long enough to kill him through, well for most people that is.

This fight will require the absolute best out of everyone on your raid, focusing on healing and damage. You will need as many Rogues as possible, even forgoing precious raid spots for them. Trading out Warlocks and Hunters is not unheard of for this fight, as it’s necessary to try to fit in as much pure DPS as possible.

Set-Up!

You will need to clear through the Abomination Wing, which is quite difficult. The trash is very difficult, unlike the other wings. It’ll take you awhile to get through it, but if it proves impossible then you have no hope for taking out Patchwerk.

As for your raid, you need more than fifteen healers and at least four Warriors (if not more). Then you need a few Warlocks and as many Rogues and Hunters as you can bring (more Rogues then Hunters may be preferred). Five Mages should be enough, although it’s generally considered that you should take the people who can do the most DPS regardless of class.

You’ll need a ton of consumables as well. Flask of the Titans for each of your main tank and your off-tanks (that’s at least four Flask of the Titans per hour), along with Stoneshield Potions and any other potion/consumable you can stack up. Your Rogues need to have plenty of consumables as well. Agility potions, Dragonbreath Chili, any other food buffs you can put up. You need anything and everything, no matter how little the effect on everyone on the raid (except healers). You need an absolute ton of DPS in order to take out this monster within seven minutes.

It’s advisable to try out your DPS buffed up on other bosses and trying to see what configuration gives the best results. The entire thing with this fight is doing as much possible DPS.

Before the match, assign healers to your off-tanks and your main tank. They should heal only those people and no one else.

Skills

Hateful Strike: This skill is what you must control to allow your raid to successfully defeat Patchwerk. It will hit the person with the most HP that is near him. It does an INSANE amount of damage but it’s a regular melee hit. That means with enough HP and armor you can live through it. If a Rogue has more HP then any of the Warriors then it will hit a Rogue, which will drop your raids DPS.

It has never been known to critical strike anyone.

Here is what you should need in order to live through it:

Armor Potions Defensive Stance HP Needed to Survive
9000 None No 12,500
9000 None Yes 11,000
9000 Greater Stoneshield Yes 10,000
10,000 None No 11,500
10,000 None Yes 10,400
10,000 Greater Stoneshield Yes 9,500
12,000 Greater Stoneshield Yes 8,500

Here is how you can figure up these numbers yourself. First take the armor formula ( armor / ( armor + ( ( 85*level ) + 400 ) ) ) (source) to find out the amount you absorb. Then you would take his max known damage (30,000) damage and take away the amount of absorb. So let's try it out!

We have 9,000 armor (with 2,000 additional from Stoneshield potion). We would run that through the formula to figure out we have 67% absorb (round up). Now, we remove 67% from 30,000 and come up with 20,100 damage taken from 30,000 which leaves 9900. Now, if we have Defensive Stance going we add an additional 10% and come up with 77% out of 30,000 which is 8,900 damage. Now, since we are talking about his max hit here, we have to assume you want a little hp left over to heal with. So add on an additional 500-1,000 HP to be sure that you can heal through it.

If all of that is too much work, try out this nifty calculator right here that should be able to make this process less confusing.

Remember you can raise both your DPS and your Hit Points/armor with potions. You'll need plenty of various consumables to get past this encounter, so be sure to bring plenty! As a guild effort, of course, run Molten Core and disenchant everything then sell the Nexus Crystals. Use the profits to fund the consumables to take out Patchwerk.

You should glance over the available potions in our Alchemy Guide to get a better scope on what you need.

Enrage: After seven minutes he gets bored with you and goes into a killing frenzy taking out the entire raid very fast.

Tactics

Send in your main tank and your three off-tanks. Let them draw aggro while having your healers heal them. They should stand ontop of each other. When you are confident that the main tank has aggro (couple of sunders should do it) and the hateful strike rotation is set (he'll only hateful strike 3 people and will only hit the one with the most HP), send in the entire raid and begin DPS. From here on out you just need your healers to heal the main tank and the off-tanks (they should be assigned to each tank) while the rest of the raid attempts to unload as much possible damage within seven minutes.

You fail this encounter when there are no more off-tanks (and Hateful Strike begins going after your DPS) or when seven minutes is up. That’s why the encounter leans more towards raw damage then skill. If too much of your DPS dies early on it will probably be best to call the fight
