Avoidance is a passive ability meant to allow your pet to survive in AOE damage for a significantly longer time. While the description at the trainer says avoid, the tool tip for the skill says reduces damage, so don't be thrown off. It reduces the AOE damage that your pet takes, which is very useful for raid and instance situations. Most raiding hunters will grab this for their pets.

Cobra Reflexes is a skill that confuses many hunters due to the vagueness of the description. It raises your pets attack speed by 30% but lowers the damage done. Most hunters avoid this because of the wording. What it really means is that the damage per hit is lower, but not 30% lower, therefore it is in fact a boost to your pets damage output.
It is a great ability and any hunter that uses their pet for DPS or PVP should ensure they have this skill.

Great Stamina is one of the staple abilities that almost all hunters teach their pets. The only factor that changes is what rank the hunter uses, based on how many points they have left after all the other skills. A point of stamina on a pet equals 10 health, so it can add up quickly. Especially considering that it is factored in before modifiers such as hunter abilities and pet type stamina boosts.

Natural armor is the other staple among hunters, where most pets have some rank of it. Natural armor raises your pets armor value. It does this before all other modifiers are applied such as hunter talents and pet type bonuses.
It is generally viewed as the weaker of the two staple abilities though, and if you have to sacrifice on the rank of one of them, natural armor is the one to go lower on.
