Ryzom Ring: First Impressions

by Byron Mudry

Milko was obviously very enthusiastic about Ryzom Ring and having seen it, so was I. By the end of the interview / demo / training lesson, I was completely blown away at the power and simplicity of the tool. Ratboy accused me of going into complete fanboy mode, and I can’t completely disagree.

Ryzom Ring is still at least a month away from release, but already looks polished enough to be released. While I went into the interview unsure that I wanted yet another MMO to play, no matter how cool the background looks, I came out, absolutely needing to get this game.

There are few things I have enjoyed more in the past than designing my own Quake and Unreal levels. I spent many hours toiling away on levels for myself and friends to play, and even though it was a ton of work it was always rewarding. This system is much easier and intuitive than any tool I have used before and allows much more customization.

I HAVE to have it, and if writing your own adventures or designing your own levels is your thing, you need it too. Even better than the level creation, is the ability to use the tool to create your own digital movies. I can’t wait to get home and have a try at it. I can see MANY long nights disappearing playing around in Ring.

On that note, I may have to warn Milko to change his phone number and email, as I am sure he will start receiving many angry calls from my wife for the long hours I spend in Ring.
