Game Stop CEO Sees Digital Downloads in 2 Decades
The Internet is a fad, no really, it isn't that useful.
CEO's say the darnedest things. I think that they've listened to themselves for so long that they really believe their own shtick. Dan DeMatteo, the CEO of Game Stop had this to say about digital distribution:
"Aside from the games, the bandwidth, etc., our studies have concluded that the network won't be in place to do digital distribution of full games until 2020 to 2025. And that's using today's size, but as consoles get more powerful, games get bigger. Right now, a 30GB game with your best T1 line is about 72 hours to do it."
Who uses a T1 anymore, isn't that like dial up? (I'm kidding, and yes I know that a T1 is 1.544 Mbps) I'm being unfair, Dan did have some excellent points about piracy protection and the fact that Game Stop is really a clearing house for new and used games and a way to recycle/increase revenues while providing a valuable service for gamers and publishers (that is my translation of what he said anyway).
In his defense, I would say the current Warhammer Online pre-launch download and authentication woes in Europe are helping the Game Stop case. Warhammer is a triple A MMO that will have very good sales at launch but nothing like Grand Theft Auto 4 or Halo 3. I can't imagine the pipes needed for titles such as those to launch digitally. That being said, I still find his time frame a little long in the tooth even if I agree with his short term assessment.
