Some of you might remember the Dynamix - Sierra 1990 DOS title Red Baron, a fully featured WWI aerial combat sim that regaled perhaps the last time in modern warfare that combatants actually had faces. Aside from the original Civilization and a brief, traumatic stint before the 9th grade social, Red Baron was my one true adolescent love. Then came Red Baron II and Red Baron 3D, which were both graphically thrilling for their time, but fans of the series have been pining for another iteration ever since Sierra Entertainment went on the skids in 2000.
Our day may have come at long last, and with a free online MMOG framework to boot! Springboarding off the September release of the Flyboys motion picture (which, despite the lousy reviews at Rotten Tomatoes, I really have to say it was one of the most enjoyable war movies I (and my girlfriend) have ever seen, not to mention a commendable treatment of the horrors of World War I), Flyboys Squadrons lets you take to the air, Great War style.
Check out the art and screens below, but first: here's the skinny from developer iEntertainment, the geniuses behind the award-winning Warbirds WWII MMOG flight sim:
