How does combat work in EQ2?

Combat is pretty basic in EverQuest II. Basically, if something doesn't hit you first you either launch a combat art, use your auto-attack key, or click the auto-attack icon and you'll start whacking at it. That at least gets you started. After that, you'll need to use combat arts or spells to kill your target.

What's the difference between combat arts and spells?

Combat arts are melee skills use primarily by fighters and scouts. Spells are magic used by mostly priests and mages. There are some classes, such as the shadowknight and paladin that utilizes both frequently.

How do ranged attacks work?

We have various choices for ranged attack if you play a class that allows for it. You can either carry a pouch and throwing weapons or use bow and arrows. Most classes that use ranged attacks will also have combat arts that they may use, but for basic ranged attack, just have weapon and ammo and click your ranged button when you are appropriate distance from your target.

How do I know how difficult a target is?

Mobs in game have a "con" system. Colors are assigned based on your level or the average level of your group, white being your same level. The colors are as follows:

  • Gray - will not yield any benefit or non-body loot for killing.
  • Green - Far below your level, but will yield small amounts of experience and will drop loot.
  • Blue - slightly below your level and will yield some experience.
  • White - Same level as you or your group.
  • Yellow - Slightly above your level.
  • Orange - Above your level and somewhat difficult.
  • Red - Too difficult and will resist your damage.

After color, there is skill of the mob which is indicated with arrows. vvv = 3 down arrows. The mobs in this encounter are very weak for their level and likely grouped with other weak mobs. vv = 2 down arrows, again weak for their level and likely linked. v = one down arrow, slightly weaker for their level. No arrows indicates a mob that is average for it's level. ^ = one up arrow indicates a mob that is slightly tougher. ^^ = 2 up arrows, likely a heroic (group) encounter and likely linked with another mob. ^^^ = 3 up arrows, the toughest for it's level and either heroic or epic.

How do locked encounters work?

You have the option in game to choose to use the locked encounter feature. More or less, this eliminates the potential for "kill stealing" by locking the encounter to you or your group (from other players) the moment you engage the mob in combat.

The upside is that you don't have to worry about someone coming in and doing damage and taking your kill. The downside is, if you get in trouble other players cannot effectively help you. I personally play with it off for solo encounters because KSing isn't really a problem in EQ2. For open dungeons or contested mobs, I turn it on. You can find the button to toggle it on and off in your in game Options Menu under Group Options.

Can I buff other players like in EQ1?

WTB SoW! One of the great things about EverQuest I was the ability to buff anyone and everyone! This isn't really a feature in EQ2. some buffs, such as Spirit of Wolf will indeed work on anyone. Most buffs are self or group/raid only and won't be usable by anyone you are not grouped with.

Why do I slow down while in combat?

Run speed boosts that come from buffs or your mount will suspend during combat. Once the encounter is finished or broken, you'll get the run speed back!

I'm hitting the target with my combat arts, but my auto-attacks don't seem to be working, why is this?

Combat arts are far more forgiving in regards to distance and positioning than auto-attack is. In order for an auto-attack to land, you need to be facing the target and close. A lot of players give this no attention, however auto-attack can be a large portion of a players damage, so get into the habit of positioning yourself properly early on!

What are Heroic Opportunities?

These are combos that add a little extra for your group or against your target. Every class is given a HO button that you can hit to start a wheel that allows for synchronized CAs and spells that end in extra damage, or a buff. It is something you can do on your own while solo, but the real fun comes in when you have a group using them. They can be a little tricky in groups, but if you learn how they work, then they can be a nice little addition to combat.
