A Closer Walk with Tuurgin

The Shaman Patron Quest

By Ralsu

The Shaman is perhaps the best class for having a feeling of individuality even among players of the same class in Vanguard. The patron quest allows a Shaman to follow a path more akin to his play style, whether it be melee- or caster-oriented. The Shaman also becomes the second true pet class in the game once the patron class is complete.

I will take you on the journey told with 2 dozen pictures based on my experiences as Arpad, a wood elf Shaman who chose to follow the path of Tuurgin. While the first two steps may be unique to the wood elf experience, the bulk of the quest seems the same for all Shamans who follow Tuurgin.

The Tuurgin Patron Quest

  1. Logging the Quest
  2. Picking a Path
  3. Goroza the Ancient
  4. Servant of Tuurgin
  5. The Great Bear
  6. Conclusion

I. Logging the Quest

This is the part of the quest that will vary by race. As a wood elf, Arpad started with Syrila Beastborn, the Shaman instructor in Ca'ial Brael (picture A1). Syrila referred Arpad to Caelrial Brightshadow, a reclusive Shaman who can be found in the eastern part of Jalen's Crossing (A2).
A1: Syrila Beastborn is found in the Hall of Glyphs.
A2: Caelrial Brightshadow should be able to help.

II. Picking a Path

The map in picture B1 shows where to find Caelrial. She introduces herself and determines that you are ready for the Spirit Walk (B2 & B3). Then she identifies the three choices before you: Hayatet, Rakurr, and Tuurgin (B4).
B1: Caelrial hangs out by herself.
B2: Remember your manners when you meet Caelrial.
B3: Arpad is deemed ready for the Spirit Walk.
B4: You have three choices.

If you'd like, you can ask Caelbrial to explain each of the three patrons. Tuurgin, our choice, is the spirit of strength and rage (B5). Hayatet is the spirit of fire and rebirth (B6). The wolf Rakurr is the spirit of speed and agility, also called the Hunter of the Sun (B7).
B5: Tuurgin is the bear.
B6: Hayatet is the phoenix.
B7: Rakurr is the wolf..

Once you are done learning about the patrons, Caelrial makes sure you understand the differences and that your choice is permanent (B8). You must then choose the path you want to follow (B9). Tuurgin followers will be sent to find Goroza the Ancient at Lake Carlsson in the Vault of Heroes chunk in Thestra (B10).
B8: Caelrial ensures you understand the permanence of your choice.
B9: Choose wisely.
B10: Those who follow Tuurgin will have to go to Vault of Heroes.

III. Goroza the Ancient

Since Arpad started out on Kojan, he had to ride the boat to New Targonor. From there, he went north and then east along the road until he reached Vault of Heroes (C1). The path is mostly safe, but be alert for roaming mobs. You'll find Goroza was expecting you at Lake Carlsson (C2), and he'll advise you that the path of Tuurgin is for the strong (C3).
C1:  Stick to the road in the way to Vault of Heroes.
C2: Goroza was expecting Arpad.
C3: Goroza explains that followers of Tuurgin are strong and ferocious.

The first task you must complete is to demonstrate your dominion over the lesser animals of the forest. To that end, Goroza asks you to bring him Wolverine fangs, Cockatrice beaks, and pristine horns from Summit Jumpers (C4). The Wolverines and Summit Jumpers are plentiful of the SE side of the lake. For the Cockatrice beaks, I had better luck going into the southwest corner of the chunk. Returning three of each item to Goroza earns his respect for your prowess among the lesser animals (C5), but he reminds you that a greater trial lies ahead (C6).
C4: You can solo this kill quest.
C5: Goroza approves.
C6:  You have a greater test ahead of you.

IV. Servant of Tuurgin

Don't pay too much attention to the directions for finding the Servant of Tuurgin given by Goroza (D1). He said something about bears to the northwest and had me searching the bear cave in the chunk (there for another quest) for a long time. Just swim straight north from Goroza to the shore. Start looking slightly NW and you should find an translucent bear. Speak to him to continue your Spirit walk and learn that you will fight three of his kind in succession (D2). It is possible to pass this test, Tuurgin's test of your courage solo, but it could be tough. When you finish talking to the Servant of Tuurgin, he becomes an aggro level 14 2dot mob. 30 seconds later, a second one will spawn and attack you. The third one comes in a minute after the first one attacks. By yourself, this could be a difficult fight if you don't kill quickly or manage energy well. A guildmate of mine, Kaik, volunteered to help me and it was a snap for the two of us (D3).
D1: You must find the Servant of Tuurgin
D2: You will have three fights without rest.
D3: I had help from Kaik from my guild.

V. The Great Bear

Return to Goroza after the Servant of Tuurgin's test and the Great Bear himself will appear before you (E1). Hail Tuurgin to find that you please him and that he accepts you into his den (E2 & E3).
E1: The Great Bear is so impressive Arpad had to kneel.
E2: Tuurgin is pleased with Arpad.
E3: Tuurgin does not accept the fearful or weak,

VI. Conclusion

After speaking with Tuurgin, you will receive some abilities. Chief among those are the spell to take the form of a bear, which increases your strength, constitution, and armor class. Alternately, you could choose to summon a bear pet, the Attendant of Tuurgin. You cannot be in bear form and summon a pet at the same time. Finally, you will also gain Spirit Walk of Tuurgin, and ability that allows you to check for new patron spells and abilities from Tuurgin each time you gain a level.

Tuurgin is a powerful path. Arpad can frequently act as both tank and healer in a group. He mostly uses the bear pet, which he calls Noh (I have a macro for /petname Noh that I use each time I summon the bear). It is possible to use regular heals on Noh (another macro: /targetauto "Noh") even though Shamans learn a pet-only heal later on in life. Noh generates a decent amount of hate with each attack (hit or miss it sometimes seems) and even has an ability that debuffs the mob and forces it to target Noh for a few rounds (this must be used manually and works within the normal cool down system). All of these factors combined means that Noh can easily tank 3dot mobs of equal level to Arpad when the two of them are alone. With just two people in group and no adds, Noh can tank 4dot yellows.

As your Tuurgin Shaman develops, you will acquire a good number of abilities that hinder the melee capabilities of your foes and aid those of your allies. Overall, Tuurgin is a solid patron choice for the player who enjoys to engage in melee combat and who wants to add to his chances of survival solo.
