6 Slash Commands No Newb Should Be Without

by Shayalyn

QUESTION

What are slash commands? Which ones should I know when I start playing Vanguard?

ANSWER

Slash commands are in-game commands with many varied functions. Hitting the / key on your keyboard will instantly take your cursor to your chat window where you can finish typing in the command. Some slash commands are social macros that will make your character emote (often complete with an animation or voice over). While it's fun to /dance with your friends, socials are non-essential fluff, and we're not going to cover them here. We're going to touch on a few /commands that every newb should know for communication and utility.

/tell

You'll need this command when you want to communicate with other players. Let's say that you see someone named Arpad broadcasting on the /ooc (out of character) channel that he's looking for a group to tackle a quest you also need to take on. How would you contact Arpad to tell him that you'd like to hook up? You could holla back over the public /ooc channel, but it's preferable to send him a private message. To do this you simply type /tell Arpad <your message>. It might look something like this:

/tell Arpad I need to do the Wardens quest, too. Can I join your group?

Once someone has sent you a /tell, you can reply to them by hitting the R key.

/who

Let's say that before you send a /tell to Arpad you want to check and see what class he is, what his level is, and where he's currently located in the game. That's where the /who command comes in. Typing /who all Arpad will return information about any players on your server with the name Arpad. (And, just like the immortals in The Highlander, there can only be one!) Watch your typing, though. You need to include the word "all" in your /who search or you may not get the results you're looking for. /who Arpad will only return results if Arpad happens to be in the same chunk.

Here's a list of some other useful /who commands:

/who all LFG  -  Returns a list of players who are looking for a group
/who all LFM  -  Returns a list of groups that are looking for more players
/who all shaman  -  Returns a list of players who are shaman
/who all 10 20  - Returns a list of players level 10-20
/who all cleric 10 20  -  Returns a list of clerics level 10-20

Remember, leave the word "all" out of your search to look only in your current chunk. Also keep in mind that if your search is too broad, your results will be truncated.

/invite

When you're ready to invite someone to your a group, you can do it via the /invite command. Simply /invite <Playername> to send a group invite to another player. Just remember that most folks don't like random group invites. Send a /tell first to ask the player if they'd be interested in joining you.

/stuck

Hey, it happens sometimes. You're minding your own business and suddenly you find yourself stuck in the terrain and unable to move. Under these circumstances, type /stuck and your character will be moved to a safe location. Keep in mind that /stuck isn't a means of instant travel. It takes a good long time for the /stuck command to move you. (approximately 30 seconds, but it can seem like a lifetime.)

The /stuck command is also helpful if you happened to lose your connection or crash while in a dangerous area such as a dungeon. When you log back in after a crash, your character will be invulnerable for 3 minutes providing you don't move. If you can't (or don't want to) recall, /stuck will get you out of a bind. Just remember to stand still, even if there are monsters beating on you. They can't hurt you while you're invulnerable as long as you don't move.

/corpse

It's going to happen eventually--you're going to die, and you're going to have to move your tombstone. The /corpse command will bring your tombstone to you provided you're in range. You may just want to have this one as a macro in case you have to drag your corpse for any distance (the secret to dragging a corpse is to spam your /corpse macro hotkey while you run). To create a macro, right click an empty spot on your hotbar and type the slash command in the macro window. Give your macro a name and you're good to go.

/flush

Game acting weird? Getting unusual lag or funny graphical glitches? Give /flush a try. The /flush command clears the game's cache and forces it to reload assets. It's not an instant answer to all of your graphics or lag problems--it won't turn your nVidia 6800 card into an 8800 GTX, nor will it buy you another gig of RAM--but if the game's doing something it doesn't normally do, /flush is worth a try.

And there you have it...a few essential slash commands to get you rolling as you dig into Vanguard: Saga of Heroes. There are many more slash commands to learn, and you'll likely memorize many.
