Guide to the Shire

The Shire is an expansive land consisting of well cultivated farmland
surrounded by pleasant glades and woodlands. However, with the
rise of the shadow from the east, all is not well in the Shire.
Wolves and goblins are found in the outlying lands of the Shire, and
southern bandits have crossed the Brandywine river and are found in
remote places in some of the otherwise idyllic land.
Hobbit characters who are new to LOTRO will appear in the Shire at
Little Delving, a small community right next to Michel Delving, the
center of Shires government. There are many, many quests
available for a new player in the Shire.

half of the quests in the Shire are light hearted, in that they talk
about issues that, while fun and entertaining, are not particularly
quests which might be considered life or death for the residents of the
Shire. A good example of these quests are the
href="http://lotro.tentonhammer.com/index.php?module=ContentExpress&func=display&ceid=487">postal
and pie quests, both of which involve delivering or retrieving
parcels to or from several areas of the Shire. Probably the most
interesting and light hearted quests in the Shire are the
href="http://lotro.tentonhammer.com/index.php?module=ContentExpress&func=display&ceid=308">Chicken
Quests, which are session play quests where you look for defenders
for your chicken yard playing the part of a brave chicken.
The other half of the quests in the Shire are more serious. There
are basically four threats to the Shire, these are wolves, bandits,
spiders and goblins. The wolves are an issue which, while an
threat to a few areas of the Shire, are centered in Budgeford, where a
warg has entered the Shire and is organizing the wolves. The
goblins that threaten the shire are located north of Brockenborings, at
the edge of the Shire in the Greenfields. Scary is a small town
in the northeastern Shire which has had a problem with spiders which
burst forth from a cave in the quarry which provides stone for the
Shire for building. Finally, in the southern Shire, located in
the heights above Woodhall and Bamfurlong, southern bandits now are
starting to kidnap residents and terrorize the area.

Delving is the center of the government of the Shire, though perhaps
not truthfully considered the heart of the Shire. Michel Delving,
Little Delving and Waymeet are all in this area, and there is a lot to
do here. In Waymeet, the chicken quests are available, in Michel
Delving the beginning of the epic prologue for hobbits begins, and
Michel Delving is the center for crafting, excepting farming (which is
best done in Hobbiton on The Hill). Little Delving does not have
much going on except for being the starting point when a new hobbit
adventurer appears in the Shire. The postal quests start in
Michel Delving .
The Hill, Hobbiton-Bywater and
Needlehole
Needlehole is a lone area on the far side of the marshes of the Shire,
at the western border of the land. In Needlehole there is very
little to offer for crafting, but there is plenty of adventurer
involving a group of foul Dourhand dwarves who have moved into the
area. The slugs of the nearby marshland must be killed for one of
the deeds of the Shire.
Hobbiton is the heart of the Shire, and while there are not many quests
found here, there are a lot of people who you speak to while questing
from other parts of the shire. The pie retrieval quests start
here, leading eventually to the Pie-Runner title and a nice pie recipe
from Holly Hornblower. The Hill is the best place for high tier
farming, since it has expert farming fields available.

Overhill
Overhill is a logging community in the northern Shire past the Hill and
Hobbiton. Overhill has a problem with spiders and wild animals in
the woods north of the community, and most of the quests here have to
do with it. In addition to these quests, there is some wood and
skin related crafting here, and you can order wood and skins from npc
merchants here.
Budgeford and Frogmorton

These two communities are located on the banks of the river going down
the center of the Shire, and contain some colorful quests, including
(in Frogmorton) an escaped giant toad, and a evil warg and wolves in
Budgeford. There are also an few adventures in Budgeford
involving a hobbit playing a crank by imitating a Black Rider.

is home of the rich an powerful Took family, an iconic family in the
Shire. There are several quests here, most of them involving
bandits located to the east of Tuckborough in the heights above
Woodhall. The
href="http://lotro.tentonhammer.com/index.php?module=ContentExpress&func=display&ceid=372">fireworks
acquisition quests are found here, the only place you can get
fireworks in LOTRO.
Woodhall has not got much going for it, though you are sent here for
some quests. It is located quite near the bandits which threaten
to the south, so caution should be used traveling here.
Bamfurlong is the name for Farmer Maggots farm along the Brandywine
river in the southern Shire. You visit this area for the chicken
quests and some other quests from Stock and Buckland, but otherwise you
have not many calls for visiting this area.
Stock is a small town to the far east on the road just before bridge to
Bree. While there are a few quests here, these relate generally
to the bandits near Woodhall, or are part of the postal delivery,
tavern and and similar quests.

Brockenborings and Scary
Scary and Brockenborings are the highest level areas of the
Shire. Located near the Greenfields, these areas suffer the most
from the attentions of
href="http://lotro.tentonhammer.com/index.php?module=ContentExpress&func=display&ceid=483">spiders
and goblins. Several high level quests occur here, and one
should take the time to head to the northeastern part of the
Greenfields to do a couple quests set away from the towns there.
The epic prologue quests end here, with a battle with a goblin
chieftain. If you should need to do any crafting, Brockenborings
has a full compliment of novice trainers and equipment, aside from
farming, and the Scary and Brockenborings area is the only area where
tier 2 resources such as barrow iron are found.
