Perpetual has integrated vast amounts of Roman lore into their game. |
And this brings me to what I believe will make Gods and Heroes truly impressive in the eyes of gamers. Like a real life relationship, you may be drawn to the game by its impressive good-looks and beautiful setting. The more time you spend with Gods and Heroes, you begin to see that you have much in common and that you and the gameplay really fall hand in hand. But what really will keep you with Gods and Heroes forever is the true depth of story and personality that is underneath all the impressive elements of the game.
Time and time again, I’ve heard from developers that underneath the world is an impressive story that integrates itself into your actions in the game world. However, I’ve never really felt that stories have honestly been a large part of any game world that isn’t a single player RPG. From my short moments in Gods and Heroes, I could feel the story really coming to life around me. Appropriate foreshadowing, grim tales of deeds yet to accomplish, and other such elements really have me interested in what sort of stories the game is ready to tell.
“We had 12 people working on this element of the game,” McKibbin said. “We put a lot of effort into the story of the world.”
I truly hope there has been some divine force guiding McKibbin, Hedlund, and the rest of the Perpetual team. Our prayers may finally be answered, and the gods, still sitting on their lofty perches, may smile at what has been accomplished.
