Loading... has its poster tube and swag bag, it's time for NY Comic-Con 2009!

NY Comic-Con starts today, and this extra short edition of Loading... comes to you from the Edgewater Landing ferry stop as we prepare to dodge Hudson River ice floes and Airbus A320s on our way into mid-town Manhattan. Today we have interviews with NetDevil's Jumpgate Evolution team, Mythic Entertainment, Cryptic Studios, and a few of the guys working on a spy vs. spy MMORPG: Global Agenda. We've haven't met with these guys before, but Unreal Engine 3 graphics and player-owned agencies sound full of win. Keep an eye on our NY Comic-Con 2009 portal page later today, as well as throughout the weekend and into next week as we'll be posting what we find on the show floor and in our panel series there.

If you can't come to NY Comic-Con but want to listen in on the panel and roundtable tomorrow as they happen, Vivox's Voon team will be on-hand to broadcast the panels for our Ten Ton Hammer premium members! There's still plenty of time to join up, and all you need to do is follow the instructions on our NYCC '09 Tune in with Voon page.

If you are joining us for the MMO panel series tomorrow (Sat. Feb. 7th) in room 1A24, be sure to stop and say hi. We might have some extra swag and prizes for you guys as well. One last time, here's the panel schedule:

(all times in EST / GMT -5)
  • 11:15 am - Mythic Entertainment – Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning with Executive Producer Jeff Hickman and Creative Director Paul Barnett.
  • 12:30 pm – Cartoon Network – Fusion Fall Online with Exec. Producer Chris Waldron and Content Designer Matt Schwartz
  • 1:45 pm – 38 Studios with User Interface Expert Irena Pereira, Community Manager Steve Danuser, and Director of Art Thom Ang
  • 3:00 pm – Cryptic Studios with Star Trek Online's Craig Zinkievich and Champions Online's Bill Roper.
  • 4:15 pm – SOE - DC Universe Online with Jim Lee
  • 5:30 pm – MMO Roundtable with developers from all five panels and a few very special guests.

As always, comments welcome in the Loading... forum or email me, that is, when I get back to email sometime next week. Have a great weekend!

Shayalyn's Epic Thread of the Day

From our WoW: News Discussion Forum

Could WoW Be Considered a Religion?

Yesterday we warned of the threat of exposure for World of Warcraft's secret society and it's secret language. Today the implications grow even more mysterious as we discuss whether WoW could be considered a religion. Theo Zijderveld, a grad student at the University of Colorado, argues the religiosity of WoW in his master's thesis titled Cyberpilgrims. Have you unwittingly become a member of the Barrens Baptist Church? Or maybe you've joined the Netherstorm Universalist Unitarians. Or maybe your fate lies with some more cryptic clan led by a megalomaniacal Blood Elf who promises you protection and eternal salvation if you'll only hang on his every word and let him sleep with your spouse...or emasculate yourself. (In the first case, you should probably pass on the Kool-Aid; in the second, you'll want to keep your hands cupped over your virtual genitalia.)

Learn more about the cultish implications of World of Warcraft and share your comments here.

Awesome Quotes from the Epic Thread:

"The author explains spirituality as an attempt to make sense of things. It flows with the concept of being 'spiritually enlightened'--meaning that 'I understand why it makes sense.' 'It' can be substitued for anything: love, war, fortune, etc. I don't understand how WoW helps a person reach a state of being spiritualy enlightened. WoW is a limited world. Can you reach enlightment if you are limited by what you can experience?"

- Keferus

"Seems to me religion is based on hope and faith in a higher power and I can guarandamntee you WoW gives me neither hope nor faith."

- AngryBeaver
