A Hands-On Look at Fury

Page Two of Two

So…How Did It Play?

In one word: frantic…but not in a bad way. Perhaps one of my biggest sticking points with current MMOs is the time it takes to pursue your objectives. Run here, run there, kill this monster, collect loot, go back…rinse and repeat. Fury sheds all that filler and leaves the unscathed raw edge of PvP behind.

Loading up the client, I first selected a template that I wanted to play. Not a class – there are no classes in Fury – but merely a designation of what type of player I was. I selected “offensive fighter” because I like to get my hands bloody. Before I entered battle, I was prompted to select my abilities. The list was extensive, and I had a set amount of points in which to pick my skills. Hilliam described this as something similar to Magic: The Gathering; you have to pick your skills wisely or you may find yourself outmatched in the arenas. While I can’t remember all my abilities, those that I do remember included Blitz, which was a speed boost; Endurance, a HP boost; a damage skill called Fiery Blades (or something similar); and Berserker Rage, a damage enhancer.

Our skills selected, our group was shuttled off into our arena. Once inside, you can’t go running around right away; you’re forced to stay in one spot for approximately 30 seconds so all players can log-in. After that time, however, it was no holds barred.

Before our match, Hilliam stated that, “If you’re not pressing a button every second or so, you’re not playing fast enough.” Taking this tactic in mind, I went racing off into the arena, looking for my first victim. HP and other boosts float around the arena in a FPS sort of way, and I picked those up as I went hunting.

With only three of us in the level, it took a little longer to find a target than I’d hoped, but my waiting didn’t last too long. Inside the arena was a target, albeit a buffed up one. He glowed with some sort of alien armor, and I wondered if attacking him was a good idea.

Yup…definitely a good idea.

My adrenaline rushing, I hit my number keys in rapid succession and made sure to hit my attacks a good number of times. I knew I was going to die. But, to my surprise, I dropped him and collected a piece of “blood money” that I could later spend back in my realm. At that point, the ghosts of the Masons attacked us again and off went the power.

But, even from that small stint, my blood-rage was sated. I went around our group asking who I had just pwned. It turned out to be Jason Ocampo from Gamespot, who also has his own Fury impressions posted on the net. He’s a good guy, so I didn’t give him too much ribbing.

In the end, Fury was quite energetic and, most importantly, fun. If you’re not familiar with Fury, give it a look and head over to their main site for more information.
