Guide to Barbarian Feats

Feats 51-58

By Nuitaran

We have rated the Feats below based on our experience as to which are going to be most helpful and useful. Feats are rated on a scale of 1-5 with 1 being the worst and 5 being the best. A rating of 1 or 2 means the Feat is pretty much useless to a barbarian and one that you probably want to avoid.

A rating of 3 indicates that the Feat can be used with some careful planning, or with certain class combinations. We reserve a rating of 4 only for those Feats that are almost necessary picks for certain types of builds or class combinations. A rating of 5 designates the best of the barbarian Feats and ones players should seriously consider for any DDO Build involving barbarians.

51. Tower Shield Proficiency
Official Text: “You are proficient with tower shields.”

Prerequisite: Shield Proficiency: General

Comments: Personally I’m not a big fan of Tower Shields. I know that some people swear by them, and if you are one, maybe you can find a way to squeeze this one in. I don’t think the Attack penalty is worth it.

Rating: 3
52. Two Handed Fighting
Official Text: "Increases the chance of glancing blows when wielding a two-handed weapon."

Prerequisite: Strength 15

Comments: I know it’s tempting to make that cliché greataxe wielding Barbarian, but seeing it makes the cleric wince a little. If this is what you really want, go for it, but I would seriously recommend backing it up with a level of Fighter for Heavy Armor proficiency.

Rating: 2
53. Two Weapon Blocking
Official Text: "Increases the amount of damage you can block when defending with two weapons."

Prerequisite: Two Weapon Fighting

Comments: If you’re going to go dual wielding, this is one of the Feats you should consider, but Two Weapon Defense is far more useful.

Rating: 2
54. Two Weapon Defense
Official Text: "Grants you a +1 bonus to your AC when you wield two weapons."

Prerequisite: Two Weapon Fighting

Comments: If you are going to be Two Weapon Fighting this feat is a must to keep your Armor Class reasonable.

Rating: 2
55. Two Weapon Fighting
Official Text: “Reduces the penalty for fighting with two weapons.”

Prerequisite: Dexterity 15, Received at Ranger Level 2

Comments: With the changes to the combat system from Module 3, and the rates of Two Weapon Fighting, it has become a serious DPS [Damage Per Second] style. I think Barbarians are better served focusing in other areas as getting all of these feats require a Dexterity that you might not want to waste resources pursuing.

Rating: 2
56. Weapon Finesse
Official Text: "You use your Dexterity bonus instead of Strength bonus to determine bonus to attack with one or more of the weapons below."

Prerequisite: Base Attack Bonus +1

Comments: You should only be taking this if your Dexterity is higher than your Strength and you will be using light weapons, otherwise this is pointless.

Weapons included in Weapon Finesse: Dagger, Handaxe, Kama, Kukri, Light Hammer, Light Mace, Light Pick, Rapier, Short Sword, and Sickle.

Rating: 2
57. Weapon Focus
Official Text: "Provides a +1 bonus to attack rolls when using [weapons of the specified type]."

Prerequisite: Base Attack Bonus +1

Comments: Absolutely a must have in any weapon you plan on using regularly. You aren’t doing damage unless you are landing hits, and this is a great way to ensure that you are landing hits.

Rating: 5
58. Whirlwind Attack

Official Text: "Activate this ability to attack all enemies in a 360 degree arc around you."

Prerequisite: Base Attack Bonus +4, Combat Expertise, Spring Attack (Dodge, Mobility)

Comments: It just takes too many Feats to get here for a Barbarian. That makes me sad. I love this Feat.

Rating: 1
