Quest Guide: Taming the Flames

By Blackwater

Time to rescue Master Fulvio, trapped during his investigation of a volcanic cavern full of elementals. The scroll of Planar Binding sent to him by Master Thorpe to control the elementals has been stolen. Its time to rescue the scroll from the grip of the madman Calefax and restore the Scroll of Planar Binding to its rightful owner!  This is newly a solo quest, not difficult but always wipes the unwary and unprepared party. Very few survive the first time round. Highlights include: fire, fire and more fire (oh, and lava).

Key for this quest is to have plenty of fire resistance and a fair amount of healing.  It's generally a good idea to move with some haste, as the elementals here respawn quickly.  Needless to say, an elemental bane weapon is a very, very handy thing to have in this quest.
This is not a quest for a disorganized party. Pick up groups, unless they have shown in previous adventures to be competant, should avoid this quest. People should know their job, be attentive to what's going on, and have a sense of purpose to survive this quest.

Walk-Through:
Map of Scorched CavernsThis adventure has many, many respawning fire elementals and generaly a lot of mobs eager to burn you alive. Make sure you have fire resitance at all times. Electric resistance is good for some of the Air Mephits attacks too.

You will notice that the fire elementals over the small pools of lava regenerate once killed. Its best to ignore these and run past. Kill only the ones that follow or you will soon run out of mana. Wounding weapons are great for this quest but frost weapons will also serve you well. The only traps are spiked traps, easy enough to jump past if you need to push on past a build up of Fire Elementals.

First out of the starting area head to the bottom of the map for the Jewelled Key. Throw the levers but be ready for the Fire, Air and Earth Elementals that this will spawn. Once you have access to the room with the chest, send one party member to open it and let them run back up to you.
Someone with a nice high reflex saving throw is good to save against the fireballs. Fireball in the Face

Now head over to Master Fulvio. On the way there, in the areas marked with blue lines on the map, fire walls will drop down and trap the unwary in a room with mephits. This will only happen once, the first time you enter each marked area. Kill the mephits to raise the firewall and proceed. Stick together for this as its easy for a charging barbarian to get trapped alone in hostile territory! To get to Master Fulvio you will have to use your Jewelled Key to unlock the door opposite from his prison. Kill the mephits within and loot the locked chest. You now have access to Master Fulvio and the shrine. Master Fulvio will send you after Calefex the Mad to acquire the Scroll of Planar Binding.

Lots of ElementalsFight your way back through the tunnels to Calefax the Mad. Kill the madman, loot the Scroll from his still warm body and ransack his chest on the way out! You will have to return the scroll to Master Fulvio to complete the adventure, but be wary of the last trap of mephits at his prison before you can finally hand it to him.

The key to this quest is not to get too distracted by the constantly respawning Fire Elemntals. Make sure you know where you are going and keep focussed. Just dont forget the fire resistance!
