style="font-family: tahoma;">Zone Guide: The Waterworks

By

The waterworks is one of the areas
every new player is sure to see.  With it's well know Lost Seekers
quests, unless you wish to pay to enter the market gate every time you
ever go through it, your going to be going into the waterworks.. a
lot.  Furthermore, not only do these quests qualify you to enter
the market get without paying, but it also provides a lot of favor for
backpack spaces, and (for low levels) good experience.

With the addition of slayer quests
and rare encounter quests in the waterworks, there is a lot to see and
do here besides simply travelling from one end to another.
Providing a nice low level soloing area, you can get a lot of
experience for doing the slayer and rare encounter quests here.
However, it should be noted, you will need a fair spot and search check
to find some of these encounters.  If you can reach a total of 8
in each of these skills you can do this.  The best way, if you
wish to solo these quests, to reach that level of skill (for a non
skill based class) is to do the hard to find encounters at the maximum
level (4th).  At 4th level you can use heroism potions.  With
a base 12 in wisdom or intelligence, + a potion of fox's cunning or
owl's wisdom, + a potion of heroism + a +3 search or spot item, you
gain a total of 8 in either of these skills.  If you know where a
secret door is ahead of time, you can do without spot.  This is a
bother, and expensive if your not able to twink yourself, but is a
means to reach these.  Otherwise, for the encounters behind secret
doors, you will probably need to find a low level rogue or similar to
help you.

Some of the rare monsters are a
little tough to handle by yourself if your levels 1 or 2, or are not a
combatant class, especially the spell casters since they do damage
regardless of your armor class.  Planning ahead or just waiting
until you reach level 4 will make a big difference in dealing with
these.

The
following are
the rare encounters here and where they are found.  All rare
encounters give chests.

Slay
Yiley, Tunnelworm Shaman
: 250 XP awarded (Cr 3 Kobold Shaman)
(Chill Touch, Magic Missile).  Yiley can be reached by
swimming from the waterworks bridge, west, into an underwater tunnel
which leads into a cave where he is occasionally found.

style="font-weight: bold;">Slay Gnarkill, Troll Butcher: 250 XP
awarded (Cr 4 Troll)(Regeneration, Rend).  Gnarkill is found
behind an intelligence rune in the east branch of the waterworks, (rune
needs int 16), past three grey oozes.  A trap is found nearby,
which is made up of a rune on the ground.  When this rune is
stepped on, a fire trap shoots fire for a few seconds nearby (not on
the spot the rune is located though), and this also occurs if one steps
off the rune.  When Gnarkill approaches, step on the rune,
catching him in the fire, and for a short time, Gnarkill will not
regenerate.

style="font-weight: bold;">Slay Crumble, Forlorn Rust Monster :
250 XP awarded (Cr 3) (Destroys equipment). Crumble is located at the
end of a hallway heading east from the pit in the east branch of the
waterworks.  You must have a 16 wisdom to activate the rune.

style="font-weight: bold;">Slay Ecru, Spider Recluse : 250 XP
awarded (cr 4) (poison).  Ecru is the fairly strong, and will kill
all but the most powerful 1st and 2nd level adventurers.

style="font-weight: bold;">Slay Dhulokk, Troglodyte Adept: 250
XP awarded (cr 3)(scorching ray). Dhulokk is found in the tunnelworm
(west) branch of the waterworks, before the bridge, in a western
doorway.  Fire damage will kill adventurers fast, so it is best to
be cautious fighting this opponent, unless one is prepared with a fire
resistance spell or potion.

style="font-weight: bold;">Slay Har-har, Gnashtooth Shaman: 250
XP awarded (cr 3) (magic missile, obscuring mist).  This shaman is
a real pain in the butt.  Obscuring mist and magic missile can
wear down an adventurer unless prepared.  Har-har is found south
of the shrine, behind a secret door.
